(Currently, this does not detail the exact fate of the Deepsinger, as that's still in progress. We'll endeavor to remember to update it when the thread's done. Thanks to PG for compiling the summary!)

PULAO AND CROWNBREAKER FOLKS: There's one big question we need to get squared away before we can head back to Liminal, and that is who, if anyone, is staying on the island?

I'm going to toss a couple of toplevels to that effect below. Please comment on the appropriate one! (Pulao-school folks, feel free to chime in too.)

ETA: To clarify, the main thrust here is 'are Pulao folks staying or leaving.' Crownbreaker folks are welcome to weigh in about their own choices, but don't have to.

Well THAT escalated quickly. )
Next Week: The Deepsinger will be dealt with, and the Crownbreaker and Pulao contingents determine whether to stick together or go their separate ways.

So, Lupa has been investigating the Deepsinger and realized it was brainwashed. This happened ICly a couple days into the current mingle. The mission to actually Do the Thing, will ICly happen probably beginning of the next mingle, because everyone is taking a couple days to prepare and gather more info!

This post is to OOCly arrange who's going, and what their contributions will be, and pin down exactly when, ICly this is happening. Toplevels for chiming in will be below!

in which tensions continue to mount )
Next week: The first instances of full-on Stricken berserking will be evident - in both mermaids and humans. And as more information starts to come to light, heightened suspicion and hostility abound.

Okay, threading with lots of people goes slowly and painfully so this is to gather opinions and suggestions from Crownbreaker leadership only. (Sorry newcomers, but you're the topic of debate here.)

The mermaid council will be gathered in the shallows to confer with their human counterparts about the following:
1. The Cornu - humans - what they want and if they get it - supplies, sailing lessons, etc.
2. The Cornu - mermaids - integration into the Crownbreaker school, if they can be taught Song, possible quarantine, etc.
3. The Pulao - humans - what they want/if they get it
4. The Deepsong - forays to investigate y/n? how many? who? what should they do?
5. Illness - Stricken signs among humans? wat?

Please post any opinions, information, and recommendations your character would voice and feel free to use this post to talk ooc among yourselves so we can get an idea of the consensus. Thanks very much personages of all flavors!

LAND HO )
Next week: The effects of the Deepsong will be more immediately obvious, and while the hide and seek game is over, that doesn't mean tensions between the Crownbreakers and the new arrivals have completely dissipated.

Since I've realised that I missed people who I didn't realise were Investigating when trying to to contact people about this on plurk (apologies, that was organisation fail on my part), I'd just like to stick here for the record the agreed upon cover story for the human Investigators.

Basically, after Zoe floated the idea of claiming to be refugees, Lyall uses his Infiltrator Knowledge to determine that a good place to pretend to be refugees from is the Stepstones, a group of northern islands that tend to be used as a staging point by either Paramo or En Zhenming for their various invasions and raids. Individuals who are going with other cover stories could have joined up later I imagine, but that's the origin story for the boat. If you want to read the plurks that organised this, they are here and here.

I know there's also a second cover story to explain why the only person on the ship who knows anything about sailing looks about 12, in that during a storm all of the crew were washed overboard and died. Except for the Drizzt, who was both the Cabin Boy and the Captain's son.

So yes, that's what's been organised - is there anything I'm missing there, or that we need to modify? Someone might also want to detail the Fishvestigator cover story here too, but I'm less familiar with that so someone else might want to explain that in the comments.

The Pulao

Captain Wolcott brings the ship safely to anchor off the shores of the isle, much to the relief of Mifeng, who sets off to get the lay of the land. Jeina searches for willing spirits, and Raito looks for some space to practice his own craft.

Meanwhile, amongst the finned folk, Ginevra keeps a concerned eye on her school, and Teruo looks for avenues of ingress on the island. Calypso is temporarily drawn out of her isolation by the disquieting Deepsong, which Rilis also finds jarring. Despite the island's haunted atmosphere, Jolie and Valterri have contact with what might be natives.

The Crownbreakers

Alosa coordinates the merfolk's participation in the haunting ruse, while Riddick keeps the pirates in line. Valdis keeps watch on the perimeter waters, until the Deepsong overwhelms her. Poecil finds the haunting fun, and Xiva does her duty. Ambrose counsels rest, and discusses shady activities. Karal and Julius seek news and opinions from their fellow Crownbreakers.

The Cornu

Some of the investigators are mermaids, with varying degrees of success. Lyall is discomfitted by the prospect of an entire Jaunt spent at sea. Drizzt attempts to keep the ship from running aground. Shinji makes sure everyone won't starve. Lupa proves that it isn't only mermaids affected by the Deepsong, and Claudia asks after potential solutions. Matthew gets a much-needed makeover. Hajime gives warning about a hostile merman. Tachibana proposes an alliance with the Pulao school.

Plotting For Next Week

As promised, our next mingle is the Cornu making landfall. Plot in the comments below!
[personal profile] powersthatbe
A slight dilemma has presented itself on the matter of the Cornu reaching the island. That should effectively be happening now, in-game, but with the upcoming holiday weekend meaning people will be scarce, it's unclear how much participation it'll get right away. There are two options:

Option one: The mods bust out a mingle as quickly as possible, likely tomorrow (Friday). This helps keep the jaunt moving as scheduled, even if participation may fall off with players being holiday-occupied. It also, admittedly, presents a non-zero chance of the speed of plot outpacing people who aren't available over the weekend.

Option two: The Cornu landfall mingle is posted a couple of days after Christmas in place of the Week Two mingle, but as a 'midweek' mingle, with Week Two coming later. The jaunt would effectively be pushed back a week (which means there wouldn't be any Liminal Space time in the month of January), and those players who are available over the holidays and waiting for landfall info would have to wait longer, but get a more thought-out mingle to work with after the fact.

A poll to help us figure out which option to go with is below. Please take a second to vote.

The Haunted Isle
Phase Three, Jaunt One
December 18th-January 28th

The Powder Keg
The gunpowder smuggler Pulao has had a long, uncomfortable voyage. Last summer, she arrived at the secret port on the Bando Peninsula to find a province deeply in revolt, no longer selling gunpowder but manufacturing it for its own use. The captain was blackmailed into carrying away a group of prominent Bando rebels fleeing half a step ahead of the emperor’s assassins. Following an exiled scholar’s rumor, the harried pirates sought a paradisical haven past the edge of mapped waters… but they were not the first to find it. The Pulao was waylaid at the edge of the Labyrinthine Shoals by a school of mermaids, bloody-mouthed and flint-speared, wearing coral and shell armor and ready for war. The mermaids have come, they say, looking for their kin, and like lampreys they latched onto the Pulao and helped it navigate to the center of the Shoals.

The Match
Two years and three months ago, a fleeing band of rebel mermaids and three pirate ships met by chance formed a tenuous alliance and plunged through the Shoals to find the mountainous atoll and clear lagoon in their center, escaping pursuit by both naval forces and a kraken sent by the Dread Empress of the mermaids. One of the three ships sank in the shallows just offshore. One was grounded and cast up the beach on its side. And one made anchor safely. Christening their new home Crownbreaker Isle, the pirates settled into the lush tropical jungle that shrouded just above the beach, and the merfolk divided into two groups - the Stricken, with their dangerous, cannibalistic disease, went into the reefs about the Isle, while the healthy mermaids remained in the lagoon in the island’s interior. Within a week of settling, a disturbing number of the sailors vanished, all at once - and suspicion has never entirely lifted from the Stricken, although shrewder minds noticed all the vanished came from the same wrecked vessel, and wondered.

Six months of shore leave, however, are enough to make any wanderlust-driven buccaneer run mad, and eighteen months past, the Harbinger set sail, taking with her both pirates disillusioned by paradise and mermaids who wondered if their ongoing fight for freedom still continued in the depths. The isolated community has suffered leadership struggles, the odd duel or feud, but it has flourished, scavenging the wrecked and beached vessels for good waterproof timber with which to build a village.

Then, they see sails on the horizon. And those sails do not belong to the Harbinger. Stricken scouts report armed mermaids in charge - the newcomers have guns, magic, a working vessel besides. They’re a threat, an unknown, and even making them disappear might draw further foreign attention. The only advantage the Crownbreakers possess is their familiarity with the island and its reefs.

The Burning Fuse
A game of hide and seek ensues, using jungle copses, underground springs and pools, the impression of a haunted island left in the form of an abandoned ghost town. But it cannot last. Will discovery bring trust or conflict, acceptance or conquest, unity or yet another exile? Who is to blame for those - on both sides, new and old, human and mer - who go missing? As the Investigators arrive - aboard their own ship, seemingly conjured from Liminal Space - they represent another dangerous unknown to all involved. And after the first night all spend on the island, a distant, throbbing song sounds from the deeps beyond the Shoals, leaving Sirens glassy-eyed with wonder...
