Captain Samuel Vimes - Discworld (Reserved)

C H A R A C T E R;
NAME: Samuel Vimes
CANON: The Discworld
POINT IN CANON: Just before 'Guards, Guards', drunk, dissolute, disillusioned and many other 'dis'
AGE: Old enough to know better, young enough to keep trying. (likely about 40)
APPEARANCE: Tall, thin, craggy-featured and unshaven. He wears a perpetual scowl on his face, and his bloodshot eyes are almost always squinting suspiciously at something. He dresses in the copper helmet, breastplate, patched pants, threadbare jerkin and cheap, cardboard-soled boots. And a badge. Never forget the badge. He doesn't.
CANON HISTORY: Sam Vimes is a copper from a long line of coppers. His father, Thomas Vimes, was a Watchman. His grandfather, Gwillem Vimes was also a Watchman. The Vimes can trace their decent to Watch Commander Suffer-Not-Injustice "Old Stoneface" Vimes, who personally arrested and beheaded the last king of their home city of Ankh-Morpork, Lorenzo the Kind (a sadistic madman and pedophile). Sam's father Thomas was a member of the Night Watch and a drunk who was run over by a cart. Sam grew up with his mother in the poor-but-proud Cockbill neighborhood, where he joined a gang as a youth (the Cockbill Street Roaring Lads) and learned to fight. He hasn't stopped fighting yet. He joined the Watch when he was sixteen, just before a revolt in his home city "The Glorious 25th of May" which successfully replaced one madman ruler with another. He was taken under the wing of Sergeant-at-Arms John Keel (who may, or may not, have been himself from the future. Time is funny that way). He rose steadily through the ranks to become a Captain of the Night's Watch just as the Night Watch was becoming irrelevant. The madmen that usually ruled the city had been replaced with the frighteningly sane Patrician Havelock Vetinari, who began to move away from using law enforcement to control crime and towards using crime to control crime. The Assassins and Thieves were given legitimate guilds, made licensed and approved criminals and given the task of dealing with unlicensed crime to the Guilds, making the City Watch more or less irrelevant. The Night Watch, especially, has dwindled to four members: Sam, Sgt. Fred Colon, Crpl. Nobby, and poor old Herbert Gaskin (who's dead). With nothing to actually do, but too stubborn to quit doing it, Captain Vimes has taken up another family tradition and taken to Strong Drink.
CANON PERSONALITY: Sam Vimes is one of nature's coppers. He's not just a man with a badge, he literally could not do anything else, even when he is doing something else, he's still a copper. He has a nasty, suspicious mind and trusts no one and nothing, as befits a twenty-five-year man of the Night Watch. He doesn't like dwarves, can't stand trolls, never trusted vampires, hates werewolves, can't stand the company of other Humans and is, in general, quite racist but against everything. He is an incorruptable cynic who cannot be swayed or bought, partially because of an almost physical allergy to being on the winning side (born of a knowledge of the sorts of things winners usually do to win) and his duties (long rendered irrelevant) as a copper. His quarter-century of walking the streets of his home city, the filthy, sprawling Ankh-Morpork, the largest city on the Disc, have left him with an intimate knowledge of its every street and everyone that walks them. He can tell where he
is in it by the feel of the cobblestones through the thin soles of his boots. He has seen his city at its worst, seen all of its sins and been beaten and battered by it daily for the whole of his life. He hates his city and would never live anywhere else. He will do everything in his power to get back.

Sam Vimes also has the special disability of being 'knurd', that is to say, the opposite of drunk. It takes him several shots just to get sober. Otherwise, he becomes hyperaware of his own senses and thinks too deeply about the depressing truth of the world. None of which is good for his disposition.
ABILITIES: Copper's instincts, the ability to take a blow, even several blows, even a quite serious and grievous beating at the hands of those who know how and still come up spitting teeth and defiance. A good, if not well educated, investigative mind. An eye for detail. The ability to see the absolute worst possible option in a situation and be quite right about it The sort of skills for violence one would expect from a man who has a) Lived in the Shades of Ankh-Morpork his whole life b) Reached a 'certain age' and c) Not died.
INVENTORY; Short sword, cheap scabbard, rotting belt. A crossbow. And a long staff with a bell on it. Boots with cardboard soles so thin you can feel the cobblestones under them. Badge. Half a clay jug of 'Stronge Spiryts' from the Mended Drum Tavern. Two groats to rub together. A hangover that deserves its own character entry.
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? None of your bloody business!

S A M P L E S;
FIRST PERSON: I wake up with a pounding headache. I wouldn't have minded so much except that it seemed to be doing most of its pounding on me. And why shouldn't it? Everything else in this stinking pigsty of a city has had a go. Why not me own head? I don't have to open my eyes to know where I am. I'm in the Shades. I can smell it. No pong like it anywhere else on the Discworld. That unique blend of 17 decaying herbs and toxic spices that makes up the Lower Shades stink. That stink would be declared a war crime if it was ever deployed in battle instead of our joke of an army. There's nothing about this city that isn't rotten or cruel or decayed. That's why I love it like I do. That's my job. Oh, there's more to it than that but it all starts with the love. The love for a town that hates me, has beaten me down and taken everything from me and would again if I turned my back for a second.

Because I'm the bloody Night's Watch, me.

THIRD PERSON:
"And at that price, it's like..."

"Cutting your own throat, yeah, yeah, Don't give me any bloody ideas, Dibbler." Sam Vimes grimaced and pinched the bridge of his nose with one hand and put his other on the pommel of his short sword. Or where the pommel of his short sword should have been. Had it been in its sheath. Had his sheath been on his belt. Had he been wearing his belt.

Sam grabbed Dibbler by the throat and lifted him up off his feet.

"One chance, pie-monger. Where is my bleedin' swordbelt?"

"Your... what, sorry, what?" Dibbler looked legimately confused, insomuch as Dibbler ever looked legitimately anything. "What would I be doing with a swordbelt, now?"

"I'm certain I've no idea what goes on in that pinched little head of yours. Maybe the leather in my belt represented an improvement over the usual quality of meat you use in those sausages? Don't really care, just give it back!"

"What about that gent there?" Dibbler's shifty little eyes darted to one side and Vimes' followed them, to a black-cloaked form darting into a nearby alleyway. Vimes swore, dropped Dibbler and darted after the figure.

"And ask him if he'd like to buy a meat pie or maybe one of Dibbler's patented Suprise Sausages! Prices so low it's like cutting me own throat!" Dibbler yelled after him as Vimes sprinted around the corner.

He grabbed the figure by the long, dramatic and utterly impractical cloak, gave it a good tug to send it crashing to the ground and then slammed an elbow down just about where its neck would be. It squealed satisfyingly.

"Oy! What's this now, guv? Stoppit, stoppit..."

"Not bloody likely, you're under arrest. And. You've. Got. My. Bloody. Swordbelt."

"I gotta right, guv, I do, look in my... ahk! my vest pocket..."

Keeping one arm on the man's face, he reached into the pocket with the other and pulled out a piece of paper. 'Zebbo Mooty, Thief Third Class' A license from the Thieves' Guild. He was a licensed thief.

"Put... urk, yer receipt in yer boot-top, if yah please..."

Sam reached into his boottop and pulled out a small piece of paper.

"Item: One (1) sword (heavily used), One (1) Sheath (cardboard), One (1) belt (worn) + 1 ekstra hole in"

"Lemme up! I'm guilded, me!"

Sam got up and pinched the bridge of his nose. His head was starting to ache. Apparently, he had heard it said, that some people drank and then got hangovers. He generally started to get hung-over and then drank to keep up. And he could feel a doozy of a hangover coming on.

"Dunno why yer so tetchy. I gotta right."

He was right. He did.

"Bloody hurt me. It'll do my neck in for a week." The Thief sulked and rubbed the back of his neck. "Tha's 'gaisnt the rules that is, hurting a licensed thief in the carryin' out o' his duties. T'ere's a fine fer it, there is. Ten groat."

"Sod." Vimes grabbed the scruff of the man's shirt. It was patched but it was still newer than Vimes' own uniform jerkin.
"Off."

"Or I kin take it up wit' the Patrician, I can. I gotta right."

He did. Grinding his teeth so hard that he was a little surprised that there wasn't a little pile of tooth dust forming at his feet, he took the ten groats from his pouch. His last ten groats as a matter of fact.

Of course, being a licensed theft, the Thief did get to keep his swordbelt. But Vimes did get the nifty receipt.

Ten groats. Sam Vimes could have sworn. And, in fact, he did. Long and loud until the last few tiles fell off a nearby roof and small animals started to fall dead from the eaves of the nearby buildings and Dibbler's sausages started to squeal in pain.

Bugger this. He needed a drink. Unfortunately, even the squeezings from the swill they served at the Mended Drum cost one of the groats he paid in fine. Double bugger.

C H A R A C T E R;
NAME: Elliot Nightray
CANON: Pandora Hearts
POINT IN CANON: Retrace 60, post-death
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE: Here
CANON HISTORY: Here and here
CANON PERSONALITY: From the get-go, Elliot presents himself as a forthright person, the type of person who speaks (or yells) his mind and acts on what he thinks is right. It’s both an advantage and a disadvantage—as Leo says; he will seek opinions from others but then forces his own thoughts on them when their answers don’t suit his liking. Despite being a smart boy, Elliot can be thick-headed and stubborn. This smartness shows in how perceptive he is; he’s able to understand the type of person that Oz is fairly quickly and he rebukes him for it without hesitation. He also can pick up when he’s going to be in the way in, say, the middle of a fight, and will not simply linger.

But his stubbornness doesn’t always lead to good things. He was fond (and arguably still is) of his two adopted brothers (despite being told to keep away from them by the rest of his siblings) but he became hostile towards Gilbert after Gilbert had left the house during the events with the assassin of the Nightrays (the headhunter). Elliot decided that this was because he was afraid rather than ruminating further on it or digging to find out the facts. He snaps to quick decisions when he shouldn’t.

Following their initial meeting, he knew full well that Oz hadn’t done anything wrong even though he was a Vessalius, but refused to admit so at first. Not until he learned more about Oz did decide aloud to judge things more with his own eyes rather than others. Even before saying this, he acted in ways that it was obvious he didn’t feel real animosity toward Oz. In Sablier, when Zai Vessalius showed up and offered him a hand up (while ignoring Oz), he told him that who Zai should be helping was his son, not a Nightray. Elliot subsequently became enraged after he heard Zai say that Oz was a ‘thing’ and therefore was none of his concern. Leo had to quickly step in to keep Elliot from getting into trouble. Despite pretending as though he doesn’t care about them that much, Elliot does in fact place a lot of value on others.

Most of the time, Elliot is aware of the faults in his own behaviour, but it is difficult for him to admit to them. He’d asked Leo why he didn’t lecture him after he’d first discovered Oz was a Vessalius, but it was because Leo knew Elliot was already aware of the problem. Most times Elliot can come around, though. He’s a realistic person with a strong moral code and he simply cares a lot about other people. He acknowledges things such as it not being stronger to fear death, and something like happily self-sacrificing themselves will only hurt others.

He will act on his temper. When Elliot feels intense emotions, the people around him are probably going to know about it. His temper can be violent and come on suddenly; he will yell at people without hesitation if they’ve really poked at his nerves or hit a sore spot or what they’ve said is something that he just can’t let stand. Or if he’s embarrassed or just doesn’t get something.

That being said, he isn’t like this all of the time. He was raised as the son of a duke, and as such has the bearing of one. He’s been to official functions and knows how to behave in an upper-class society. He even complains to Oz that his uncle, Oscar, lacks the dignity of a duke, showing he has standards he holds the upper class to. He’s perfectly capable of being calm around others.

One of the most notable characteristics he holds is that he’s noble to a fault. Others like Leo and Vincent have recognised this in him. He’ll selflessly protect others for no other reason than that he believes it’s the right thing to do. He’s called gentle (to his disdain) and dependable by others. Ada Vessalius thinks he’s kind, despite the way he acts toward her. When she’s knocked unconscious and left on the floor by the Baskervilles after they took Oz, he’s obviously concerned for her, even if he’d lashed out at her shortly before. He winds up getting shy and embarrassed if people act kindly toward him, though this usually winds up in him griping or flaring up to hide it.

To return to how he’s dependable; he claimed that when he drew his sword, he had already entrusted his life to it. When he starts something, he carries it through to the end. When it comes to protecting others, he won’t hesitate for a moment. To Oz, who he had only just met, he told him that he would “never let him die” while pursued by the Baskervilles. He’s also often protecting Leo, even winding up fatally wounded in his attempts to save him.

He’s loyal and dedicated toward those whom he holds value for; his family and Leo at the very top of this list. Where the rest of his family disliked Gilbert and Vincent, he was the only one who really accepted Gilbert when he had obtained the family’s chain, Raven. Elliot said that he would do what he could for the Nightray family, while Gilbert would do his part. Even despite the anger on Elliot’s part, he still regards Gilbert and Vincent as important, though he doesn’t make this explicitly clear.

One can’t mention Elliot, though, without mentioning his servant. Leo’s one of the very few people that he feels comfortable with showing his insecurities and weaknesses, who he is able to be vulnerable around and trusts completely. Leo’s both his servant and his friend. He’s a person who didn’t treat him as a scion of the Nightray house but just as Elliot; something Elliot had wanted for a long time. Leo didn’t hold back around him. He even refused his demand to be Elliot’s servant and apparently only came to the household so that he could see the Nightray library. Not to say that they don’t argue despite their close relationship but, when it comes down to it, Leo is one of the most important people to him.

Within the chapters that we see Elliot, we can see his change, how his mindset goes from following what his family told him about the Vessalius’ to changing his mind. So that he would try to understand by himself. He was forced to watch his sister die, other people around him die as he learned the truth about the children at Fianna. Finally, he learned the truth about himself, which affected him greatly. However.

He steadied his resolve despite his fear and regret and doubt, telling himself he’d take those things with him. When he first realised what he had done, he told himself that he had to remember it all, that he couldn’t shift the blame anymore. And in the end, he said he wouldn’t let Humpty Dumpty take away who he was—Elliot Nightray. Regardless of his actions in the past. Nor would he burden ‘that brat’ (Oz) with his death. He refused to let either Vincent or Oz kill him, feeling as though he himself had to deal with it, even when he knew what awaited him was death. Right to the end, he’s the type of selfless person who won’t burden others and won’t turn away from his own failures.

S A M P L E S;
FIRST PERSON: Here and here!
THIRD PERSON: Dying… was a lot slower of an affair that Elliot thought.

He wondered if his brothers had felt like this, as they laid on the floor bleeding out from wounds he’d inflicted. He wondered if, somehow, some portion of Vanessa’s body also felt like this. Or, if his mother had also felt the same. His vision was blurred, dark at the edges, and his breaths rattled slowly in his throat, slowing little by little. He wasn’t truly aware, he was caught up somewhere in thoughts and memories, memories that had been only recently returned to him.

Memories… and regrets. So many regrets.

Where’s Leo…?

Somehow, despite everything, his thoughts came back to that and that alone. Where was Leo…? Was he okay? He hadn’t accidentally hurt him, had he, when the Chain was going out of control? Elliot couldn’t stand the thought, could barely stand the memories of what he had done to his siblings. But he couldn’t move. He couldn’t twitch a finger or move his head, all he could do was keep breathing slow, painful breaths. In…and out…

He heard a voice. That was… ah, yes. Vincent. He’d offered to kill Elliot, hadn’t he? He’d offered to be the one. But there was no way that Elliot could burden him or any other person with the weight of his life. Now, Elliot knew what it was like to be burdened with the weight of a life. He knew. It was terrible, too much for anyone. Even him? Well, there wasn’t too much point in asking that… He was dying right now, after all. Dying and taking every regret with him…

Elliot’s breath hitched. Vincent was there. He struggled to say something, struggled to make his mouth form words. Each one was a whisper, but he saw his brother duck down, saw him hooking a hand in his hair to keep it from his face.

There was so much to say. And yet, all he could convey were a few last small things. He wanted to talk to Vincent about a lot, Gilbert a lot. And Leo… he had so much he wanted to ask him about, tell him, apologise to him for. However, his consciousness was fading and his mind was dulling and his breaths slowed completely now, stopped. This part of dying… was the easiest…huh?

NAME: Ada Vessalius
CANON: Pandora Hearts
POINT IN CANON: Retrace LIV, after being knocked out
AGE: Eighteen
APPEARANCE: Bam
CANON HISTORY: Ada's history on the Pandora Hearts wiki.

I'll pick up where it left off. It's confirmed that she was with Vincent in the Second Coming of Age Ceremony Arc - or at least that she was near him, because she was there when he had a minor freakout as everything began, and she noted that not only was he acting strangely, but that he also seemed to be seeing something else entirely. Unfortunately, when she tried to help him he pushed her against a wall and said it was all her fault, then told her to get out of his sight. She ran off, crying, but not to hide - Vincent found her mere minutes later trying to drag a sword away from a suit of armor so she could "Protect him while staying out of his sight," and that he doesn't need to worry because she will always be by his side. Then someone came out of the shadows to attack her, Vincent had Echo defend her, and... then she got knocked out and Vincent told Echo to take her away, which is the point I'm pulling her from.
CANON PERSONALITY: People tend to dismiss Ada at first glance - and really, you can't blame them. When the people around you are the likes of Xerxes Break, Elliot Nightray, or even her own dear brother Oz, someone like Ada Vessalius really doesn't stand out much. She's polite and kindhearted, and makes an effort to keep smiling even when she's dealing with someone she can't stand; while these are admirable traits to have, they're also the sort of traits that are expected in the daughter of a noble family. Essentially, she's "par for the course," so to speak - but that's really only when you don't know her well. Because while yes, she does try her hardest to behave in the way that's expected of her, the mask of a well-bred young lady is far from all there is.

To begin with, her politeness isn't necessarily false. While it's true that perhaps she wouldn't be as soft-spoken and well-mannered as she is if she'd been raised in a different environment - and, yes, she does sometimes exhibit the more exuberant behaviors that one would expect to see in someone of a lower class - the fact of the matter is she's just not the kind of person who gets her kicks out of being rude. She honestly means well and honestly wants to put her best foot forward, both for her own sake and for the sake of the prestige of the Vessalius family. Having been raised as nobility, she's well aware of how to make connections with others and she's equally as aware of the importance of being cordial to the people she doesn't particularly like or care about. After all, just because she doesn't like someone, doesn't mean they won't be important to the success or failure of her family. She's well-practiced at finding something good in everyone, at least as far as she must to be able to get along with them. And honestly, she's happier with herself when she can be legitimately kind to someone, because she doesn't like the way being petty or mean makes her feel.

She's got a healthy dose of responsibility in her, and it's something others have noticed - she was made a Prefect at Latowidge Academy, after all. To Ada, having special privileges entails special responsibility, and as such she feels that it's her job to look out for others since she's been put in a position of authority, particularly if they're her schoolmates, particularly if they're younger than her. Though sometimes she's unsure of what she has to offer, she's always willing to give it her all when it comes to living up to the expectations others have set for her. This doesn't just apply to her school life, either. As a Vessalius - as nobility - she feels that as much as she has a duty to her house, she also has a duty to the people her status is higher than. What are nobles without the people they lead, after all? While there is a part of her that causes her to wrinkle her nose at the more unsightly displays of low-class mannerisms, she's aware of the fact that without the people who are "lower," her own status wouldn't be as high as it is.

This isn't to say she doesn't have her moments where she comes off as rather sheltered and spoiled, because, well, she is. She's the only daughter of the Vessalius household - and for ten years she was the only child of the household - so it's really no surprise that she's not quite used to doing everyday things for herself. Having servants to take care of the more mundane tasks like shopping, or tidying up her room, or doing laundry is just a fact of life for her and it's something that, in the future, she's going to have to come to grips with not having. It's also no small surprise that people tend to hide the more "difficult" things from her - but what might be a surprise to some is that she finds it endlessly frustrating when they do so. It upset her when no one would tell her what had happened to her brother (and why he'd been cast into the Abyss, when she was old enough to comprehend what had happened). It upsets her now to be left out of the loop, though she's aware that she doesn't have as much to contribute to an organization like Pandora as some others do.

Her frustration with not being as powerful as many of the people around her manifests itself in some ways that... well... aren't quite appropriate for a young lady of good standing. Her fascination for the occult (the proof of which is kept under lock and key in the basement of a secondary residence) had its roots in a desire to be able to do something to help her brother - the problem is she tends to get sort of swept away by whatever it is that catches her fancy. She's genuinely fascinated by the occult (to the point that she originally became fascinated with Vincent thanks to a misplaced belief that he was, too), but to her it represents more than just a "fun little hobby" - it's proof of the fact that she did try to help her brother, and that she's going to keep trying to do something that will make her unique and useful even as she's surrounded by powerful Contractors from Pandora.

That said, she's not as useless as she seems to think she is. She's a lot more perceptive than people give her credit for, for one thing - as an eight-year-old she knew that something was wrong when her brother vanished, and she was aware enough of the fact that the adults weren't giving her the whole truth to be upset over it. Ten years later, she was aware enough of the fact that things change and people change to be worried that Oz might not recognize her as his sister. More recently, at Isla Yura's, she was the one to realize that Vincent was behaving strangely - and honestly? Even given that she's infatuated with him, that's quite the feat, because Vincent's behavior is eccentric enough that it might be difficult for someone to see that he was acting differently than usual. In fact, that she noticed at all speaks volumes of her perception, because someone who's convinced that they're really like someone often refuses to see any signs that something might be wrong.

But that's not Ada. She does have her brother's tendency to act like everything is okay and to want to shield others from hurt, but she's painfully aware of the way that reality is much harsher than people want to imagine. Since her brother's disappearance ten years ago she's lived her life with her eyes wide open, though she'll sometimes avert her gaze or pretend to have them shut for the benefit of others, or because she figures someone else knows better. For example - she trusts Oz implicitly. He's her older brother after all, and if he insists something's alright, she's going to do her best to believe it's alright, because he of all people would never do something to get her hurt. She's aware of the reality of various situations, but she's also aware of "convenient untruths," and when in the long run everyone will be better off if she pretends not to notice, she'll do just that. And when in the long run everyone will be better off if she's not completely safe, she'll put herself in danger or will tell people not to worry about her - really, she and Oz are much more alike than anyone would expect.

As Vincent once said, "She cries... she laughs... she's annoying..." Yes, she does do all these things. When it comes right down to it Ada is human. She lives, she loves, she learns - and she'll keep doing these things for as long as she can, because if you don't ever grow or change you're not really living, are you?

POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/A
ABILITIES: She is knowledgeable about (read: obsessed with) anything and everything pertaining to the occult. Also, she can play the piano (and thus can read music), and at least knows which end of a sword is the one you're supposed to hold.
INVENTORY; Nothing much, just the super-fancy clothes she was wearing at the coming-of-age ceremony and the sword she was going to attempt to use to defend Vincent.
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? She'll be an unholy terror if they ever visit New Orleans on a Jaunt.

S A M P L E S;
FIRST PERSON: An absolutely hideous inbox thread that I love.
THIRD PERSON: Casually reusing an old sample from Exsilium...

I can do this, Ada thinks, her eyes locked on her own trembling hands.

It's early morning and she's found herself in the training room of the Initiative Hold again. Picking her tarot deck as her weapon had seemed like a good idea at the time, but the more she thinks about it the more convinced she becomes that she should at least learn how to hold a real sword properly. Remembering her spectacular failure at even lifting the sword at Isla Yura's is, frankly, a little embarrassing. "I'll protect you, while staying out of your sight!" had seemed like such a... well... such a cool thing to say at the time, but now that she'd seen real swordsmanship in this place, she cringed just thinking about it.

She'd say it again in a heartbeat, but she'd really like to at least have a proper grip on the weapon if there was a next time.

She knows very well that her family wouldn't approve, or rather - she knows very well that her father wouldn't approve. Uncle Oscar has always seemed very supportive of the things that make her happy, and being able to really protect someone would do just that. Rather than being the one who's always protected, she wants to be able to fight by their sides. And Oz... well, maybe he wouldn't be too happy to see her handling swords, and maybe she knows that. That's why she's here alone and not with him, why she hasn't really told him what she gets up to in the mornings. She knows her brother wants her to be happy, too, and she knows he wants her to be safe.

It's heartwarming, really, but how is she supposed to make sure he's safe if he's always protecting her? She needs to get strong enough to stand beside him as an equal, especially now that they're both involved with this war.

She didn't ask for any of this, but maybe being pulled away to this strange world, to this strange time, is a chance for her to really prove herself. She narrows her eyes and wraps her fingers around the hilt of the sword in front of her with a firm, resolute grip.

I can do this.

CANON PERSONALITY:
The defining personality trait that Gilbert possesses has to be loyalty. It's this trait that drives most of his defining moments and dictates his biggest life choices. Even if for most of his life he cannot remember his early childhood, this loyalty distinction begins there. He and his brother are orphaned and on the streets, and are often mistreated because of superstition about people with red eyes, called "children of misfortune" for the ill effects that are said to swirl around them. Gilbert himself is not a child of misfortune, but his younger brother, Vincent, is -- though only one of Vincent's eyes is red. Though staying with Vincent makes his own life more difficult, and Gil admits to considering leaving him, he cannot bring himself to do it. Even if life would be less of a challenge on his own, Vincent is his brother, and Gilbert feels guilty for even having those thoughts. He won't leave his brother alone, won't abandon him as the rest of the world has.

This trait continues through his future relationships. Gilbert is taken in first my Jack Vessalius and later by the Baskervilles and the then-current Glen because he is destined to become the next Glen. He is a loyal servant all along, doing what is asked and expected of him -- until the Tragedy of Sablier comes around. (Later he will reject both Glen and Jack entirely in favor of another loyalty.) From the moment of the Tragedy of Sablier, Gil's life changes. He is flung into the future one hundred years with no memory of his past at all, save for his name. He's taken in by the Vessalius family and becomes servant to Oz Vessalius, a young man around his own age. Young Gilbert is fearful and timid, scared of everything. When Oz is kind to him and informs Gil that because Oz is his master, Oz will look out for him and keep him safe, it begins the new bond that will define his life for the next decade and beyond. Gilbert dedicates himself to Oz as his servant without hesitation or holding back. He's wiling to risk his life to stop Oz from unknowingly injuring his father when they are attacked at the other boy's coming of age ceremony. Gilbert is struck down instead and when he wakes, Oz has been lost to the Abyss. Gilbert blames himself because he was unable to save his master when he was there and thinks he should have been able to, and also because he was controlled by a Chain and hurt Oz because of it.

Because of this guilt and his continued fierce loyalty to Oz (even when Oz is missing for ten years) he agrees to work with Break and allow himself to be adopted by the Nightrays. He makes hard choices, does things that are not comfortable for him, all in an attempt to forge a contract with the chain Raven -- which he manages. Over this time, Gilbert is still the scared, timid, lost child that he has always been, but he learns to put up a defense to the rest of the world. He also faces hard choices and grows harder as a person. Living with the Nightrays is difficult. With the exception of Vincent (also adopted by the Nightrays) and Elliot, all the Nightrays treat Vincent and Gilbert with suspicion and sometimes outright hostility. They don't like that he was able to contract with Raven when none of them were and plot to get rid of him and Vincent. Gilbert tries to act tough and hard to the outside world -- though he develops a genuine affection for Elliot, that even Vincent seems to notice, noting that Elliot's acceptance and presence was one of the few reasons Gilbert could still smile in those difficult days. All the while he is single-mindedly trying to work towards recovering Oz from the Abyss. He's a man obsessed in a way, to the exclusion of nearly everything else.

By the time Oz returns from the Abyss, ten years have passed for everyone except for Oz Vessalius. Gilbert attempts to keep his identity a secret from his master. Instead of the emotional, timid child that he was, he presents as a stoic and cynical grown man -- except this is very obviously a front. He's constructed this persona as a defense mechanism, though in typical Gilbert fashion he's still easily flustered and frightened and trying to be something he's not. He's taken up smoking because Oscar Vessalius smoked, and he thinks the older man is cool. He's still terrified of cats. He's still even more terrified of failing Oz for good. For as bad-ass as he pretends to be, that fear and that insecurity still run strong in him. Despite the fact that much of his new persona is a front, the truth is that Gilbert will stop at nothing to recover Oz and to keep him safe. He has done unsavory things and is no stranger to violence. He is a harder person than the child he used to be, sharper around the edges and driven by the need to save his master from the fate that has befallen him. He can be ruthless, though this softens somewhat when Oz returns and they begin working together to fight against Chains. But even then, he knows Oz is not entirely out of danger. The guilt runs strong in him, and when his identity is exposed by an encounter with the Chain that controlled him the night of the coming of age ceremony, it's clear that the guilt for what happened is still hurting him.

Once Oz knows who he is, they fall back into a familiar routine, like no real time has passed at all. Oz is the most important thing in Gilbert's life -- his touchstone, his true north, the one thing that he knows he has to take care of, to protect. With Oz Gilbert alternates between desperately trying to play the adult and keep his young master in line, and the obedient servant dragged along (sometimes with protest) on Oz's latest escapade, and the unwitting pawn in Oz's latest shenanigans. Gilbert is easily flustered and probably too easy a target for teasing -- something that Oz and Break and even Alice seem to pick up on too well. Though he tries to pretend to be cynical, he's really quite soft-hearted and cares a great deal about people, Oz Vessalius above all. He's terrified of letting him down and not being strong enough to be who Oz needs him to be. Even when Elliot dies, Oz and Gilbert seem in a standoff of mourning where they're both so worried about worrying the other that they dance around their emotions instead of having them properly. Once they manage to actually talk this out, they realize exactly what they're doing. Gilbert worries over Oz. Oz worries over Gil. The sun rises in the east. It sets in the west. And the world turns on.

Even if he adores Oz, this doesn't stop him from arguing and fussing at the blond. Often. With other people, Gilbert's interactions are more prickly. He yells and squawks at Break more often than not, but considering how Break messes with him, that's to be expected. Break is fully aware of how easy it is to push Gilbert's buttons, and he does so. Often. But despite this, Gilbert has outright stated that Break is a friend, and he's risked a great deal to protect him, scolding the older man about accepting help and not doing everything on his own. Their relationship is strange and often very loud, but it's one that (from Gil's end at least) is a strong friendship. But it's a complicated relationship.

So is Gilbert and Alice's. At first, Gil and Alice are at each other's throats -- largely because Alice is competition for Oz's attention and affection. Of course, Gilbert also believes that Alice is also a threat to Oz's life in the long-run and informs her that it'd be okay if she were cast into the Abyss. This eventually changes significantly. He comes to feel genuine affectionate towards her and cares about the loud and energetic girl. They never get along all that peaceably, but there is a mutual understanding and caring between them, and they both care deeply about Oz, which helps them bond significantly.

Gil gets along civilly with most people, coworkers in Pandora and beyond in the circles of nobility that he finds himself running in. Again, this is a front. At Isla Yura's party, it's shown that people who don't know him see him as aloof and attractive and cool when the truth is he's exceptionally nervous and uncomfortable at these sorts of functions with so many people. He's a Nightray though, so he's mostly gotten used to filling the part of a nobleman, albeit an adopted son. Though he harbors a great deal of guilt for "betraying" the Vessalius household by allowing himself to be adopted by the Nightrays, Gil eventually gets over this guilt for the most part. He loves Oscar and Ada Vessalius and considers them family along with Oz more than anyone else, even his actual brother.

Gilbert's relationship with his brother is complicated as well. He doesn't remember their childhood for most of his life, so he holds Vincent at arm's length, afraid to get close to him and not really knowing how to react to him. Part of this is because he is genuinely terrified of the memories that he has lost, afraid of finding out what the truth about himself really is. Even so, he cares about Vincent and is confused and torn when it seems that the other man may not be on the same side of the battle that he is.

Eventually though, he comes face to face with his lost memories, willingly. In this confrontation with his past, Gilbert discovers a strength that he had been entirely unaware of. There's a new and impressive confidence in him. He's slowly starting to shed the fear that he has lived in. The truth isn't easy, but once he's faced it and recovered his past, he can finally move forward instead of hiding in fear and uncertainty. This confrontation allows him to recognize that he is a Baskerville, allows him to realize that he's been holding Vincent away and that he's been too weak because of his own fear to serve Oz as he wants to. This is about where his loyalty rears its head again and he has his Chain burn off his own left arm in order to free him from a binding spell placed there that bound him in loyalty to Glen, a fact that horrified him when he was forced to shoot Oz against his will. Furious and frightened and confused, this propels him to taking that step towards knowing himself and growing as a person. Even with only one arm, he's now more complete. He has a past and a present and more importantly a future that he has chosen. He makes the decision to rid himself of his arm and chooses to serve Oz as he has, to protect him and look out for him.

Even so, despite the sudden confidence and certainty in him, Gilbert is still the fretting and dorky thing he's always been, since when Oz is helping him adjust to only having one arm and talking about all the things he can do for Gil now instead of the other way around, Gilbert frets about not being needed at all anymore, though at least it's brief fretting. He's gained a new determination that informs his actions and decisions. In a way, he's shrugged off the shackles that have kept him fearful and hesitant his entire life and is finally coming into his own. Right around the time the world is ending, so, it should all work just fine.

Over all, Gilbert is a gentle soul who has long pretended at being harder and colder than he really is. He's spent most of his life not being sure who to trust, or if he could even trust himself. Now that he's made those strides at confronting his past and his lost memories, he is steadier and more confident, understanding his choices and what he wants to accomplish -- saving Oz and Alice, stopping Glen, even reconnecting with his brother if it's possible given their circumstances.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/A
ABILITIES:
Gilbert has several different categories of abilities. First and foremost are the ones he has through his contract to his chain, Raven. Secondly are his natural physical abilities as a Baskerville. Lastly are the combat skills that he has learned the old fashioned way.

Raven's Abilities
Gilbert is a contractor. Though he was until recently contracted through the blood mirror method that Pandora employs, he's recently reforged his contract with Raven in the way that Baskervilles do. He bears a brand on his chest, but there is no clock hand on his seal, so he is not the same as an illegal contractor and does not have to worry about being dragged into the Abyss because of his contract. The abilities that Gil has through Raven are:

- Teleportation: Using Raven's powers, Gilbert has the power to teleport himself and others, even across dimensions. Using this ability puts a great strain on Gilbert physically and often leaves him collapsed and exhausted after using it.
- Blue Fire: Raven can create powerful flames that can burn and damage chains and people and even Baskervilles. These are what Gilbert uses to burn off his own left arm.
- Sealing: Raven can seal other chains powers. He uses this to keep Alice's power in check so that Oz is not harmed further by their contract.
- Condemning to the Abyss: Gilbert's chain has the ability to drag people to the Abyss

Baskerville Abilities
Gilbert is a Baskerville which means that he has the ability to contract with Chains without the concern of forming an illegal contract and without a need for the Pandora method of a blood mirror. Because of this, his contract with Raven cannot be interrupted simply by destroying the Nightray door or the keys to it. Gilbert also possesses increased healing and endurance because of being a Baskerville. Blows that should kill him do not and he is able to continue on even when he is significantly injured.

Firearm Skills
Gil is pretty talented with a gun these days, but this comes after a lot of practice and work in his youth.

INVENTORY; Clothes, Cravat, Coat, Hat, Revolver and ammo, and his Chain (though that is not a physical thing so much as a non-physical presence that can manifest when called upon)
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? Gilbert looks a little different from his image source in that he only has one arm at the moment.

S A M P L E S;
FIRST PERSON:
[Gilbert will never get used to the voices in his head. He's sure of that. They pipe up when he's not expecting it, and he's yet to have mastered the art of not startling and looking around like he's about to be jumped. It's sort of a problem.]

Hello? [That doesn't stop him from trying it out though.] ...if this is working...

[Okay. Deep breath.] I'm looking for someone. I know he's not here now. But they said people arrive often enough. And if he does, I need to know. His name is Oz. And this place won't be safe for him.

[And even his voice softens at that name before he continues with a description he knows his master would hate. Oops.] Blond hair, green eyes. Cheerful. Small. Definitely small. Probably getting into trouble no matter where he is. If anyone ever runs into him, tell me. [And as an after thought.] Please.

[See? He said please. But now, quieter.] It's not right, for me to be in this place when Oz isn't. I belong at my master's side, no matter what. [So he's sort of pissed off about it.] It's important, or I wouldn't be asking. So... thank you for listening.

CANON HISTORY: After accidentally opening the seal on the Clow book and releasing all the Clow Cards, Sakura Kinomoto inevitably begins her own journey as a card captor set on retrieving the Cards and preventing disaster from befalling the world!

But before that, she was just a normal fourth-grader living with her older brother and father (her mother having passed away when she was just a child, but pops on in as a ghost from time to time). Sakura accepts her destiny as cardcaptor with some trepidation, but she soon puts all of her energy and efforts in capturing the Cards because no one wants world destruction. She soon runs into Li Syaoran, a descendant of Clow Reed, who wastes no time expressing his discontent with Sakura as the card captor. While their initial meeting is rocky (and worsens once Sakura starts viewing Syaoran as a serious contender in her quest of love for Yukito), Sakura and Syaoran soon become allies and work together in finding the Cards.

Sakura then runs into Mizuki Kaho who is a priestess as well as her math teacher. Despite Syaoran's obvious distrust of her, Sakura trusts Kaho implicitly due to not sensing anything wrong or dangerous about her. Kaho soon reveals that she knows about the Clow Cards and that Sakura is a cardcaptor by helping them defeat the Maze Card. Kaho appears once more to watch Sakura capture the Light and Dark cards who both leave Sakura with the warning that the Final Judgement is approaching.

Sakura captures the last two Clow Cards, Firey and Earthy, and is then confronted by Yue who has been hiding as Yukito all this time. Yue begins the Final Judgement by attacking Sakura and tells her that the disaster is everyone who has been involved with the Cards one way or another forgetting the people they love the most. Kaho interferes by changing Sakura's wand into a new form prepared by Clow Reed who basically predicted the entire story plot before his death. Sakura defeats Yue (with the attack of friendship) who accepts her as the new Mistress of the Cards. She has a vision of Clow Reed who leaves her with an apology and an ominous warning.

Even after capturing all the Clow Cards, Sakura runs into mysterious disturbances caused by Eriol Hiiragizawa (but unknown to her at the time). Each disturbance forces Sakura to change the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards in order to use them with her new staff. She also runs into Eriol Hiiragizawa who befriends her as a classmate, but who is also the reincarnation of Clow Reed. He is accompanied by two magical familiars, Spinel and Ruby Moon, with the latter intending on taking Touya's magical powers from him. Touya ends up giving his magical power to Yue in order to help preserve his existence. Eventually, Sakura discovers the truth behind the magical occurrences and Eriol and watches as Eriol casts the city into permanent darkness. He challenges her to battle him in order to save the city and the inhabitants from eternal sleep.

CANON PERSONALITY:
"Everything will surely be alright."

Armed with nothing more than a catchphrase and sheer determination, Sakura has proven herself to be able to rise above the challenges in front of her, despite never having been formally or physically trained to catch and seal wild magic. She possesses a surprising amount of tenacity even with the odds against her, especially for a ten year old. Perhaps it's due to being brought up singlehandedly by her father and brother and learning to take an active role in the household from a young age or maybe it's just because she's a genuinely good-natured child. Either way, there's no mistaking Sakura's warm heart. Her kindness is most apparent when with friends and family, but even with strangers and or non-humans (magical beasts and beyond). It's not in Sakura's nature to abandon people in need or shy away from protecting those she cares about. To do so would be unthinkable, especially if it's a situation that she can easily solve.

Sakura wears her heart on her sleeve. Her moods are always easily identifiable and she never seems to succeed in hiding her feelings from the people around her. It's easy to tell when she's lovestruck just as it is easy to tell when she's furious or distraught. She doesn't seem to mind people noticing. She usually welcomes their advice and help without feeling ashamed or dismayed. She can be surprisingly perceptive of times when identifying her own feelings. However, she doesn't have that same talent when it comes to other people's feelings like Syaoran's budding crush (which was obvious to everyone but Sakura).

While extremely energetic in the hobbies that she enjoys the most, Sakura is easily frightened of anything she "doesn't understand" which almost always means ghosts. It's gotten to the point where she can't sit through a scary story without immediately clinging onto her best friend and wailing in fear if frightened enough. That's not to say she won't confront ghosts or spooky spiritual specters if she has to, it's just that she'll do it with lots of sniffling and crying. The best way to rile up Sakura is to point out her height or make a move on her man. As her older brother has painfully learned, Sakura will not hesitate to kick her brother in the shins or stomp on his feet when he teases her. This surprising show of violence is probably an exception due to younger sister privileges though. Her tenacity also means she can be extremely competitive, as she's never the one to give up in the face of her goals especially if it means claiming Yukito's love of saving the world.

Sakura is initially discomfited by Syaoran's prickly nature, but quickly warms up to him and thinks well of him with the more opportunities she has to observe him. She never prioritizes her rivalry with Syaoran above capturing the Cards (though she may prioritize the rivalry when it comes to love...) And perhaps this is Sakura's best trait, which is the ability to go beyond initial impressions in order to get to know someone. laser beams through syaoran's tsundere

At the same time, Sakura's affable nature makes her quite vulnerable to manipulation (even if the manipulation is well-intentioned, she still manages to fall for it). When approached by people brimming with magical power, Sakura's first instinct is to admire them, rather than treating them with suspicion. Perhaps it's this naivety and innocence that compels others to try and protect her, like Syaoran, her older brother, and her magical familiars. Even after being 'betrayed' by Eriol, Sakura ends up listening to his final request without suspecting his motives. Ultimately however, the very people who try and shield her end up acknowledging her own inner strength, trusting in her to make the right decision. And it's easy for Sakura to make the right decisions because she's never had a reason to ever try and do the opposite. You could call it a side-effect from being sheltered, but she's had to battle her way through mischievous and violent spirits herself, so it probably stems from a genuine desire to do the right thing.
