C H A R A C T E R; NAME: Elliot Nightray CANON: Pandora Hearts POINT IN CANON: Retrace 60, post-death AGE: 16 APPEARANCE:Here CANON HISTORY:Here and here CANON PERSONALITY: From the get-go, Elliot presents himself as a forthright person, the type of person who speaks (or yells) his mind and acts on what he thinks is right. It’s both an advantage and a disadvantage—as Leo says; he will seek opinions from others but then forces his own thoughts on them when their answers don’t suit his liking. Despite being a smart boy, Elliot can be thick-headed and stubborn. This smartness shows in how perceptive he is; he’s able to understand the type of person that Oz is fairly quickly and he rebukes him for it without hesitation. He also can pick up when he’s going to be in the way in, say, the middle of a fight, and will not simply linger.
But his stubbornness doesn’t always lead to good things. He was fond (and arguably still is) of his two adopted brothers (despite being told to keep away from them by the rest of his siblings) but he became hostile towards Gilbert after Gilbert had left the house during the events with the assassin of the Nightrays (the headhunter). Elliot decided that this was because he was afraid rather than ruminating further on it or digging to find out the facts. He snaps to quick decisions when he shouldn’t.
Following their initial meeting, he knew full well that Oz hadn’t done anything wrong even though he was a Vessalius, but refused to admit so at first. Not until he learned more about Oz did decide aloud to judge things more with his own eyes rather than others. Even before saying this, he acted in ways that it was obvious he didn’t feel real animosity toward Oz. In Sablier, when Zai Vessalius showed up and offered him a hand up (while ignoring Oz), he told him that who Zai should be helping was his son, not a Nightray. Elliot subsequently became enraged after he heard Zai say that Oz was a ‘thing’ and therefore was none of his concern. Leo had to quickly step in to keep Elliot from getting into trouble. Despite pretending as though he doesn’t care about them that much, Elliot does in fact place a lot of value on others.
Most of the time, Elliot is aware of the faults in his own behaviour, but it is difficult for him to admit to them. He’d asked Leo why he didn’t lecture him after he’d first discovered Oz was a Vessalius, but it was because Leo knew Elliot was already aware of the problem. Most times Elliot can come around, though. He’s a realistic person with a strong moral code and he simply cares a lot about other people. He acknowledges things such as it not being stronger to fear death, and something like happily self-sacrificing themselves will only hurt others.
He will act on his temper. When Elliot feels intense emotions, the people around him are probably going to know about it. His temper can be violent and come on suddenly; he will yell at people without hesitation if they’ve really poked at his nerves or hit a sore spot or what they’ve said is something that he just can’t let stand. Or if he’s embarrassed or just doesn’t get something.
That being said, he isn’t like this all of the time. He was raised as the son of a duke, and as such has the bearing of one. He’s been to official functions and knows how to behave in an upper-class society. He even complains to Oz that his uncle, Oscar, lacks the dignity of a duke, showing he has standards he holds the upper class to. He’s perfectly capable of being calm around others.
One of the most notable characteristics he holds is that he’s noble to a fault. Others like Leo and Vincent have recognised this in him. He’ll selflessly protect others for no other reason than that he believes it’s the right thing to do. He’s called gentle (to his disdain) and dependable by others. Ada Vessalius thinks he’s kind, despite the way he acts toward her. When she’s knocked unconscious and left on the floor by the Baskervilles after they took Oz, he’s obviously concerned for her, even if he’d lashed out at her shortly before. He winds up getting shy and embarrassed if people act kindly toward him, though this usually winds up in him griping or flaring up to hide it.
To return to how he’s dependable; he claimed that when he drew his sword, he had already entrusted his life to it. When he starts something, he carries it through to the end. When it comes to protecting others, he won’t hesitate for a moment. To Oz, who he had only just met, he told him that he would “never let him die” while pursued by the Baskervilles. He’s also often protecting Leo, even winding up fatally wounded in his attempts to save him.
He’s loyal and dedicated toward those whom he holds value for; his family and Leo at the very top of this list. Where the rest of his family disliked Gilbert and Vincent, he was the only one who really accepted Gilbert when he had obtained the family’s chain, Raven. Elliot said that he would do what he could for the Nightray family, while Gilbert would do his part. Even despite the anger on Elliot’s part, he still regards Gilbert and Vincent as important, though he doesn’t make this explicitly clear.
One can’t mention Elliot, though, without mentioning his servant. Leo’s one of the very few people that he feels comfortable with showing his insecurities and weaknesses, who he is able to be vulnerable around and trusts completely. Leo’s both his servant and his friend. He’s a person who didn’t treat him as a scion of the Nightray house but just as Elliot; something Elliot had wanted for a long time. Leo didn’t hold back around him. He even refused his demand to be Elliot’s servant and apparently only came to the household so that he could see the Nightray library. Not to say that they don’t argue despite their close relationship but, when it comes down to it, Leo is one of the most important people to him.
Within the chapters that we see Elliot, we can see his change, how his mindset goes from following what his family told him about the Vessalius’ to changing his mind. So that he would try to understand by himself. He was forced to watch his sister die, other people around him die as he learned the truth about the children at Fianna. Finally, he learned the truth about himself, which affected him greatly. However.
He steadied his resolve despite his fear and regret and doubt, telling himself he’d take those things with him. When he first realised what he had done, he told himself that he had to remember it all, that he couldn’t shift the blame anymore. And in the end, he said he wouldn’t let Humpty Dumpty take away who he was—Elliot Nightray. Regardless of his actions in the past. Nor would he burden ‘that brat’ (Oz) with his death. He refused to let either Vincent or Oz kill him, feeling as though he himself had to deal with it, even when he knew what awaited him was death. Right to the end, he’s the type of selfless person who won’t burden others and won’t turn away from his own failures.
