Unfortunately, we're going to have to decline this application.

This is not due to the AU nature of the app; but rather to the fact that the app describes a character who does not seem to match Mako Tsunami/Ryota Kajiki in temperament. An open, friendly (if outspoken) character who was no less even-tempered and no more smug than most other melodramatic duelists is described having an excess/opposite of those traits; and his personality section does not mention his boisterous confidence, nor his fixation on searching for his father, a major element (perhaps the single defining element) of his characterization in the series. While some of this might be explicable due to the AU nature of the character, none of these changes are detailed as 'points of departure.'

Since your description of the character does seem to match the character as you have written him, just not as the series wrote him, we cannot accept this version of Mako. We'd like to discuss a powercap on Pearl's spirit channeling - our thought was that it would only work in Jaunt settings or while someone's in the Floor, rather than poor Pearl potentially channeling any given dead Traveler at any moment. Is this cool with you?

CANON HISTORY: Jason Lee Scott is the son of a well-to-do fisherman in the small town of Angel Grove, California. A local football legend, his athletic career was derailed as the result of a prank that lead him to flee from police and injure himself in a car accident. Suspended from the team, with an injured knee, under house arrest and in Saturday detention, Jason befriended Billy Cranston, an autistic technophile, and visited the site of an old gold mine with Billy in exchange for Billy disabling his tracking anklet. Their, a chance confrontational encounter with three other teenagers lead to the discovery of the Power Coins, four color-coded gemlike discs, and another chase scene (this one fleeing mine security) resulting in another car crash. However, this crash was followed by Jason waking up at home a day later, discovering his knee injury had healed and he now possessed superhuman strength.
Coordinating with the other Angel Grove students who had discovered coins, Jason returned to the mine, and all five teenagers revealed superhuman speed, durability, and agility, jumping, climbing, running, and falling with incredible, unbelievable power. Together the five discovered a buried alien spacecraft containing an ancient android named Alpha 5 and the preserved consciousness of Zordon, a deceased Red Ranger from millions of years before. Zordon, with Jason’s help, convinced the five that they were now the Power Rangers, guardians of life, and that they would need to train to defend the Zeo Crystal, an artifact with more potential energy than a nuclear arsenal which could create or destroy life on a planet.
After repeated frustrating failures in training, Jason discovered that Zordon wanted the Rangers to morph because the unlocked morphing energy might be able to return him to life. However, when Jason lead the other Rangers in an unwise, un-transformed confrontation with former Green Ranger Rita Repulsa which lead to Billy Cranston’s death, the Rangers finally confessed a willingness to die for one another which unlocked their abilities, and Zordon surrendered his chance at resurrection to save Billy. Now able to morph, the Rangers piloted their Zords (massive robots which took the forms of pinnacle predators) into combat against Rita and her army, working in synchronicity to defeat her. Before being knocked into orbit, Rita warned the Rangers that she was only the first of many threats to the Zeo Crystal they would be forced to fight…

CANON PERSONALITY: Jason Scott is an impetuous, resentful teenager, but nevertheless has compassion and generosity of spirit which clash with his recklessness and temper. While we never see his athletic career, he was a local celebrity, quarterback, considered a natural leader with a great future in the sport, and his charisma and (uncharacteristic) patience with the other Rangers show something of those celebrated qualities. While he’s reckless enough to steal a bull as part of a prank, flee from police, exit the driver’s seat of a moving vehicle, leap across a precipice, or confront an ancient evil without unlocking his superpowers, there’s still a nobility to him. When caught for the prank, he claimed to have acted alone, even though it meant harsher punishment. When in detention, he stood up for a stranger, unable to tolerate bullying. He exited the driver’s seat of a car in order to attempt to rescue others fleeing mine security, he was unable to abandon Billy at the mine despite the letter of their agreement permitting him to, and both jumping the chasm and confronting Rita were examples of attempting to keep his team unified and encourage confidence and hope in himself and his friends. Jason cares deeply for the people around him, forms attachments quickly, and is stubbornly, instinctively loyal even when his head warns against what his heart is doing.
That’s the bright side of Jason. But the dark side is there too. Jason’s impulsiveness and temper come from chafing under the high expectations of his family and his town and finding himself undeserving, not a legend but just another kid. As a result, he’s driven to act out, to show others he doesn’t feel he fits that mold - hence the prank, his disagreements with his father, his bitterness and loathing towards the town itself. Jason wants to be somewhere where he’s free to find himself without being defined by others, and at Kimberley’s suggestion, is ready to steal Billy’s van and run away at the drop of a hat to do just that. But even among outcasts who label themselves as crazy, he acts as a moderating influence, encouraging them, patient about their differences - Billy is outgoing and friendly to the team; whereas Jason is more quietly accepting and guiding, and the others pricklier or more withdrawn. When Zack puts the team at risk, or when Zordon shows his desires are less than altruistic, Jason’s response is anger and disdain, judging quickly, ready to start a fight with Zack, to disregard Zordon’s guidance, and take immediate physical action - the jock answer to any problem.
Stubborn, loyal, compassionate, impulsive, courageous, resentful, hot-tempered, a good listener but a bad planner, Jason Scott is no more or less a contradiction than any teenager trying to find himself in what he feels to be an unbearably high-pressure situation. It’s likely he will always find himself a natural leader and a good ‘captain’ - but not a good planner, not making wise choices, so his skill at leading others is likely to lead any team he’s on right into trouble.

ABILITIES: Superhuman Strength, Agility, & Durability - Jason can climb cliffs, leap canyons, crumple metal & break ceramics, survive car accidents with no injury and recover from scrapes, bruises, and contusions in under a day.
Morphing Grid Access - Jason can, when he’s thinking of others and in synch with his team, summon alien armor which blunts the force of blows, protects to some extent against high heat, & interfaces with other alien technology. He can also summon a sword capable of cutting through several feet of concrete in a single stroke. While he has a Zord, there appears to be no ability to summon it. It is implied the armor and sword are stored within Jason, not in an external location, and I am not clear whether this should be glossed as Hammerspace or simply allow him to access armor & sword. Some things about the Morphing Grid do seem Liminal (it is accessed by the collective bond between Rangers, it can be tapped into for energy, etc.), but the movie simply did not provide an in-depth explanation for these abilities. Regardless, I intend to play it that Jason cannot morph until he feels a connection to his teammates and is thinking of them above himself.
??? - Jason’s Ranger abilities include either teleportation or the ability to move long distances and find his way home while unconscious. The movie is unclear which of these two things actually happened. Because the original Mighty Morphing Power Rangers could use their Power Coins to teleport to and from the Command Center, I assume this is a teleportation ability, & should be powercapped with Stationary Portal Creation.
INVENTORY: just regular clothing, a wallet with a small amount of cash, ID, & etc., a police tracking anklet, a smartphone, and a Power Coin.
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? nah.

JUSTIFICATION:
Judgment. The story of Jason & Kimberly is definitely a story about hope, vocation, and redemption, people who have failed finding a new beginning and a deeper meaning. Judgment very much fits Jason’s arc; but it fits who he is as a person less.
Chariot. Jason is impulsive, sometimes self-centered, brave and self-confident while also being anxious and overly proud. He’s not inflexible, disciplined, or universally successful… but on a personal level, Chariot’s the Arcana he’s most like.
Moon. Jason is very much a person in tension, doubt, and lack of clarity, prone to romanticism, apprehension, and psychological conflict. Basically, Moon fits all Jason’s problems. However, Jason’s not deceptive, and would really dislike Moon - which could be fun, but it’s not a perfect fit.
Strength. Patient with his friends, compassionate, and with a deep well of inner strength - yes. Self- controlled, serene, or moderate - no.
Emperor. Jason is an egocentric (in a typical teenaged way) male authority figure. Nonetheless he’s not very rigid, organized, or stable, so this is my last choice.

VETO: Death & Justice - Jason’s change isn’t really that deep as of yet, and he’s absolutely not impartial, critical, or even-handed.

He only knows it’s Greece and not Rome because some of these guys are wearing those olympic wreaths of leaves on their heads. Laurels? Olives? If he’d known it was going to be on the test, he would have studied.

He’s breathing hard, heart rate’s up. Just time travel, no big deal, right? He has to get his head in the game. He closes his eyes, thinks of the Pit. Slows his breathing, moves into a neutral stance. His trainer would have called it an upright stance, Trini called it a front stance. Either way, same thing. Ready to hit or take a hit. Can anybody hear me? he says, into the silence in his own head. I just saw a dude with horse legs walking around. And this is definitely Greek Spring Break. They can sort out what that means for themselves, no need to help it along. There are a lot of guys with spears and bows. Not picking fights, but ready for trouble. We should be, too. At least in a fight he’d have a good idea what he should do next. Spring Break seemed mostly to his right. What was almost definitely a bar was to his left. The bar should be easier to deal with. Right? Right. He was going for it. “Nobody better try to card me,” he tells thin air, and starts to his left, walking confident.

On the whole, this is an excellent app, but before we can accept it, we'd like to ask for a few small changes.

1) If it's not objectionable to you, can we ask that the canon point be moved to before the Doctor became 4.5 billion years old? Really we'd rather ask Steven Moffat to change this, but you're here and he is not. If it's very important to you to play after this canon point this revision (unlike the others) is open to discussion and negotiation.

2) While we don't dispute the accuracy of your suggested powercap list, the largest number of Liminal & Psychic skills we recall ever granted to an incoming character is 8. If you'd prefer, we can trim down this list ourselves (we were thinking 6 psychic and 2 liminal skills, or maybe 5 & 3), but if there are specific powers you really want to maintain, we thought we'd give you a chance to pick them out. Often powerful telepaths entering the game find themselves very restricted by their new capabilities (the aforementioned 8-skill powercap was Charles Xavier), and learning how to cope with the restrictions is, we hope, part of the fun!

3) Finally, we'd like to request a new prose sample, reacting to a more dynamic situation so that we get a better sense for the Doctor's reactions and emotions when interacting with others, rather than pure introspection.

We do have a few powercap suggestions, based on Syeira's spell list. Summon Instrument would equate well to Hammerspace I; likewise, Shadow Walk is the sort of thing we traditionally cap with Teleport I, or with starting on the Teleport tree with the range of Teleport II. Fascinate, Suggestion and Mass Suggestion we feel should also be capped with some low-level telepathic skills. Let us know how this works for you, and we'll discuss options if necessary!

Re: Deja Vu capping, we have a suggestion. The Cursed Kingdom jaunt included the skill Questing Sense, which essentially covers the ground Hiroshi's Deja Vu does - once a week, you can ask the mods for a prod in the direction of some kind of information. How does this sound?
