Elsewhere University Jaunt Info

Elsewhere University
based on charminglyantiquated's Elsewhere University world
September 19 - October 29

The University was founded on ordinary, flat ground in the late 1800s in the country of New England. No one knows its original name. The fairy hill came later, around the 1920s. For the unknowing, Elsewhere University--EU or Elsewhere U for short--is a typical school, albeit with a few quirks. Iron washers on strings are given to all the freshmen. Green is noted as bad luck, but it's still the school colors (although the actual shades change frequently). Everyone must go by false names and never, ever say their true names. Ever.

About a third of the campus knows of the Gentry, the Fair Folk, the Good Neighbors, the Lords and Ladies. Call them what you will, call them even by your own culture's name for beings like them, for that is how they may appear to you, but always with reverence. Hailing from a magical world dubbed the Elsewhere, Fae come in all shapes, sizes, and scuttles of life.

A human may be unexpectedly swapped with a Changeling Fae. It happens. The Treaty says no severe harm shall come to or from the Changeling, and that the Taken human may be retrieved at the end of the semester. However, human, Fae, and Other will be caught up in a potentially disastrous Changeling exchange that will lead to an emergency rescue mission in the Elsewhere. Those on both sides of the divide will be tasked with helping one another with wit, bravery, knowledge, diplomacy, and of course, Deals.

From their perspective, Anna Monday is too dangerous and unstable to have around their school grounds. Storms full of glass shards sound like a really bad time for a species that mainly travels by air. More recently they considered the possibility that these storms could expand beyond the Theatre and that Anna Monday isn't entirely in control of them. They have decided they can't risk letting things be. Anna Monday isn't Fae, so they don't have the advantage of dealing with the devil they know, so to speak. To them, Anna Monday is an invasive species who could destroy their home.

To get the other side of the story, now that I think of it, it would be easiest to just chat with anyone who came into contact with Anna Monday. Trying to read Anna Monday's perspective would probably result in a similar affect to touching: debilitating disorientation, instability, temporary loss of touch with reality, too scattered information, not for the faint of heart. Fennel (Ambrose) was doing a sort of ghost hunter thing and would be the expert to talk to about ghosts having unfinished business, Red (Chloe) sleuthed in the Library and put two and two together about Anna Monday’s past as Alayne’s sister, and Taurina (Asa) lead the rescue expedition through Anna Mondays territory and saw its power firsthand. The first two can be found on campus in week 3 and 4, and all three are probably going to be on campus in week 5.

...Actually, and mostly unrelated to the above, would using this on a Fae or a Changeling count as Being Seen to them? I'm not sure how likely it is to come up at this point since the Jaunt's on the downswing and she mostly hasn't been active during it, but I've been wondering.

(Most entities she's used it on haven't seemed to detect her using it on them - although using it on Hamster World during Questing Country warped her perspective closer to that of a Harbinger or a Starmover, so it's possible for her own perspective to be affected if the entity she's reading is powerful enough - but given the way the Fae work in this setting, I wasn't sure whether they'd be an exception or not.)

It probably depends on the Fae. If they are powerful or clever enough, and her behavior changes enough to be noticed, they might put two and two together. But they might also write it off as some weird side effect, or even an allergy to their brand of magical existence.

Most of the time her behavior doesn't actually change; Questing Country is the only time she's used it on anything powerful enough to warp her own perspective. It's mostly this setting's rules I wasn't sure of, since she was able to figure out that Edward was an adult using the ability during Triad Creation Tourney and that sort of thing could potentially be seen as a different flavor of Sight.

Most of the time when Fae catch someone Looking, it’s just because the person looks like they’re staring. E.g. someone might react differently to a normal looking Glamour than a giant many legged fuchsia purple true form.

...And Yukki wouldn't be physically looking, because she doesn't actually have to. Good to know!
