THE QUESTION OF ALBION: JAUNT INFO
an uchronic fantasy Jaunt of magic and succession
March 19 - April 28
During the month leading up to the High King of Albion’s ceremonial abdication and retirement, the city of Londinium waits to see if the crown will pass along the maternal line to the High King’s sister’s child as tradition--or if the High King’s own child will raise their banner against the rightful heir as expected. It has been more than a century since there has been a succession dispute of this nature, but there is precedent--and because of this, everyone in Albion will need to think very hard about whose claim they will back.
Matters are complicated, as always, by the genii: supernatural entities who humans summon and form contracts with in order to benefit from their aid and accomplish feats of magic. In Albion, the main workers of contractual magic are the Druids, who are traditionally neutral in these conflicts--but such things are not necessarily true of the magical workers of other lands.
And there is a circle of magic workers from nearby Gaule in town.
Lead by a failed Albionese druid, they seek to contract with a far greater genius than they have before--and should they succeed, they would make valuable allies for either would-be heir. Of course, if they fail, the consequences could be disastrous...
CASTING CALL
The Rightful Heir - Albionese. The niece or nephew of the current High King, who is to receive the King’s crown at the end of the month of the abdication/coronation ceremonies. Reasonably brave, honorable, and clever underneath it all… but the surface is less than impressive and next to the High King’s Child, they seem… well, boring. Secretly, they wonder if Albion might not be better off under their cousin--and they worry that their cousin will raise their banner against them.
The High King’s Child - Albionese. A golden child. In many other countries they would be the heir to the throne--and they know it. Brave, honorable, clever, etc. to a ridiculous degree and very popular with both the nobility and the common folk. Has not yet decided whether or not to try to take their cousin’s place by force of arms, but does have every intention of convincing them through any other means that they should inherit instead.
The Master of Ceremonies - Albionese. A druid, who may or may not have possessed the gift of the tongues of beasts before they passed their initiation into the College of Druids. Younger than usual for their position, they’ve risen through the druidic ranks over the years since their initiation into the College of Druids, demonstrating wisdom and skill. They are here to perform the rituals to transfer the high kingship over to the heir.
Former Druid -- Albionese. At one time, they possessed the gift of the tongues of beasts common to those who are descended from a line of druids. Unfortunately, they failed their initiation into the deeper mysteries and that gift was stripped from them. Undeterred, they left Albion for Gaule, in order to study at the Academie and learn the foreign, non-druidic magic that anyone can do. They are currently the head of the Ring of Solomon, a semi-secret circle of magic-users.
Rich Dabbler -- Not Albionese. Their business interests brought them to the city of Lyonne in Gaule when the Former Druid was at the Academie. One of the earliest members of the the Ring of Solomon. Their ability to bankroll the group has allowed it to grow and flourish.
Genius-Descendant -- Not Albionese. Has had multiple minor magical gifts from a young age, thanks to having a Major Genius as part of their ancestry. Was recruited to the Ring of Solomon within the last year or so, after which there was a notable uptick in the circle’s ambitions. Starting to feel like they’re in over their head.
Magical Contract Lawyer -- Not Albionese. Formerly studying normal law at the Université in Lyonne, but a lecture on formal genius contracts they went to at the Academie changed the trajectory of their life. Has been part of the Ring of Solomon longer than the Genius-Descendant, but not as long as the Rich Dabbler.
The High King will be played by a Familiar Face.
