MARKET OF THE VANITIES: Jaunt Info

MARKET OF THE VANITIES
Revisiting Purgatory
January 17 - February 26

The Market of Tech Duinn sits on a hill just above the banks of the river Styx, on the edge of the Asphodel Meadows. Oaths sworn over the black water of the Styx cannot be broken, making the Market a favored location for Heaven & Hell to bargain with one another, although few angels and demons reside there. Sithen, the half-fallen angels whose only crime was to refuse to fight demons, consider it a center of culture, and often use it to trade Demesnes (feudal land grants among the Sithen which comes with supernatural powers, like an angelic Grace or demonic Dignity, but with added real estate). But that is not why it is there. Dhuosnos, the Old Man of the Market, a powerful Sithen who claims the hill as his Demesnes, first weighed and codified Virtues and Vices as tradable commodities 1,800 years (or 140 Eschatons) ago.

Strange as it may seem in these latter days, he conceived of the trade as a mercy to the Peregrines - lost souls caught in Purgatory - because they entered the afterlife with no wealth to match the Immortali (humans who have achieved undeath or eternal life, and thus keep their souls forever), and no station like those Angels, Demons, and Sithen use to measure their relative worth. The Market has always been a friendly place for Peregrines, and since the beginning of the Asaph Eschaton (which started with the speaking of the Name in Melasurei), it has been a place Peregrines rallied. In times of old, Dhuosnos sold four Princedoms to the Market - one to the Angels, one to the Demons, one to the Sithen, and one to the Immortali.

Now he has sold a fifth, to the Peregrines - and they pass and trade it between them, rather than appointing a single spokesperson. But six positions on the Market Council means votes may be deadlocked (for of course, Dhuosnos keeps a vote for himself), and so he is considering the sale of a seventh Princedom… and Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory have all noticed.

The growing Peregrine presence at the Market could nearly be considered an army. The Demons would pay almost anything for the power to bind it to their service; the Angels, to redeem these lost souls and bring them to Heaven - whether they wish it or no. The Sithen fear a third front in the war waged across their homeland; the Immortali fear being outnumbered by a group who no longer needs them for survival & who may grow wealth to threaten theirs. And the Peregrines - they seem to wish something different with every passing day, every new argument.

All creation is sending their subtlest diplomats and agents, their most coveted treasures, to this place on the banks of the Styx, where everything is for sale, all contracts are binding, and all sales are final. Who will gain a second seat on the Market Council - and what other bargains, trades, and sales may be made in the shadow of that distraction?

Matt is running this show. Jill and Airdra were both around for the first jaunt, and are somewhat setting-conversant.

An FAQ compiled from questions asked on the first jaunt, with additions about the length of an Eschaton and what’s going on in Melasurei, is available here.

Glamour

I asked on Plurk earlier whether Glamour was a tradable item, and the answer was yes, so!

I imagine trading it would follow the same mechanisms as Virtues and Sins. But when it's defined as "the distilled essence of human sentiment" (energy sourced from emotions, and not ties to any particular emotion in and of itself), what would the actual worth of it be, relatively speaking?

In the NWoD canon, "Glamour can be used to "jumpstart" the strange enchanted objects of the fae." Would this possibly extend to celestial/demonic weapons or artifacts, that require a jumpstart? Or potentially temporarily boost their abilities?

There is a skill called Hedgespinning, that allows the Changeling to channel one point of Glamour per hour into focusing on and creating a Fae item; could this work to create Celestial/Demonic/Sithen items as well?

How would other races go about using Glamour?

How would harvesting work? Typically this would be a simple matter of just skimming off human emotions, but that's the kicker isn't it - humans are an extremely minimal presence here.

The strongest Glamour is harvested from deep-rooted or intense emotions, but harvesting from supernatural creatures also brings certain risks, such as losing oneself to a derangement (mental illness or madness) that their source has. Airdra and I discussed it briefly, and we figured that Peregrines, with their only-very-recent gain of long-term memories, would give very minimal Glamour due to the lack of strong emotional history; and perhaps Immortali would follow regular Glamour rules depending on their species. But we didn't have any ideas on what would happen from harvesting Angels, Demons or Sithen.

Looking for some clarification of the free skill gain for trading away a plot role skill - does that mean if someone who has a plot role trades their skill away, they can get another skill in addition to whatever they earn from AC that month, or that if they buy the plot role skill and then trade it away, they can swap it out for free with that month's AC?

The first of those!

-The worth would be variable -- we know that's not a great answer but it's hard to be specific in a barter-based economy. Say, roughly equivalent to an equal number of doses of Sin or Virtue, but maybe more if a given buyer has greater need/more use for it. see below for what uses might be had for it!

-It absolutely makes sense that it could be used to jumpstart/unlock enchanted items.

-Hedgespinning could be used to create equivalents to Sithen items, except as noted below.

-Harvesting Immortali would work normally. Harvesting Peregrines could work normally, or could be ineffective for the reasons noted - how much emotional freight Peregrines have is hugely variable, because not all Peregrines have suffered severe memory loss, and some have, but have accrued many new memories since their last loss.

-Harvesting Sithen would be very taxing - the Harvester would experience whatever emotion was harvested in equal intensity. Angels or Demons would be the same as Sithen, plus granting Heavenly or Infernal resonance - which could enable the creation of Angelic or Demonic items, but would also make one more receptive to authority, honest, Virtuous / more rebellious against authority, dishonest, Sinful.

Do angels/demons/sithen have physical offspring/siblings/families? Or are all "families" basically found family situations?

Since literally everyone is a supernatural creature, would their Masks still be effective in hiding their Miens from sight, or would everyone just see them anyway? Or would all the conflicting supernatural energies make them fizzle out?

Is it possible to Infiltrate as a Sithen ally/employee of Dhuosnos? I can't resist a canon joke about Al Mualim. Loyal, disloyal, double agent, fence sitter, mercenary, whether he's helpful could go many ways depending on his past and how the plot plays out...

Yes, certainly! You will want to contact whichever Familiar Face player winds up playing him for details (this will be settled by the time plot role assignments go live on the 12th).

"only Dhuosnos & the Princes of the Market have actual Demesnes here" Does this mean that any Sithen who has land/Demesnes does not own land anywhere near the main setting of this Jaunt, but far off in some other part of Purgatory, say, Melasurei?

It could be near the Market, but it couldn't be within the boundaries of the Market, or between the Market and the Styx.

Cool! I'll add that to my list of Infiltration possibilities!
