TEST DRIVE #24

Welcome to the Synodiporia Test Drive Meme! Below the cuts there are two new prompts, and here are the prompts from previous test-drives, which you’re still welcome to use in this post. When you comment, be sure you specify what prompt you want to play with, and please put up your own threadstarter—it makes for a much more friendly environment than a forest of bare toplevels! OCs are especially welcome! Please take a quick look at our Directory & familiarize yourself with the concept and setting of the game before you jump in.

Our upcoming app round runs April 21-28. Our next Jaunt will be Digital Frontier: Legacy Mode, a return visit to the Grid, where investigation of the secrets held by a new computer system will be investigated. The jaunt will be accompanied by the walkabout Northern Lights, where a ski resort in Finland is subject to some unusual happenings during the longest night of the year.

Prompt #62 is a Liminal Space that offers a chance to get clean, if you can work with its quirks.
Prompt #63 gives players a taste of the exploration setup used on the Grid previously.

#62

Liminal Space is a laundromat - the rows of washers and dryers stretch into the distance, occasionally punctuated by the doors to Travelers’ private created spaces. If you’ve been looking for a chance to wash your clothes, you can even do that; there are stacks of odd gold coins marked with five-pointed stars around, apparently of a perfect size to slot into the machines.

Of course, first you have to free a machine of its resident hamsters.

They’re not true animals - instead, they’re made of cloth. One might be flannel, another denim, and so on. They’re all running endlessly in the washer and dryers like they’re hamster wheels, and the detergent and fabric softener dispensers in the Liminal Laundromat look more like a drip-feed water bottle you’d leave upended in an actual hamster’s cage.

#63

(For a quick rundown of the Grid’s various factions, see here. Automata are not on this short list, since their functions changed significantly after the last jaunt and we haven’t formally sorted out how yet.)

It took quite a bit of scanning, but the Defenders in this system are now satisfied that the Programs visiting from the Grid to help with their data reclamation didn’t come bearing new and unusual strains of corruption. Their wariness isn’t uncalled for, given that Programs come in one of two colors, and the Grid’s visitors apparently have another three to come to grips with.

With the conclusion of the quarantine protocol, all Programs are now free to explore the area and see what they can find. The task goes faster in groups of Programs, and a fair amount of work is required before a sector is considered fully processed. You might find nothing, or you might find something - or you might find danger, in the form of corrupted data.

"Hmmm. Is there a significance to that particular pigment?"

Lotor was genuinely curious. This fellow didn't seem in need of sustenance, and even if he were, Lotor had no idea what the particular shade of the creature could mean. Perhaps some sort of necessary vitamin was more prevalent in things of that shade? But it seemed rather unlikely...still, it wasn't really his problem, and the curiosity was a simple indulgence on his part.

The man's respect for his superior got a rather pleased half-nod from the Emperor. While the Galra as a people were rather...duplicitous in nature and true loyalty was exceedingly rare (and often proven to be a fool's errand, because it would quickly be taken advantage of if discovered) it was a quality trait in a soldier and Lotor had immense respect for any that practiced it.

"I would appreciate your assistance, should you have time to spare. I am unfamiliar with these machines and would be loathe to simply try one based on assumptions and experience."

I went and looked at my washing machine.

Eating a hamster made out of fabric has dubious nutritional value, but it's a big universe out there and probably somewhere in it cloth eating was viable and reasonable. "I just like blue."

Of course there's more to it than that, like his tribe colors and pride for his companions and all that, but it's more than he's willing to get into for the moment. Liking a color is easy and understandable to anyone! "Once I run out of blue I'll start on another color."

Who knows how long he'd be here. Drake was expecting a long, bland, boring stay.

The machine directly in front of him is eyed, and then the ones to the side. "Hm. Let's not do this one it has too many buttons. This other one is very straightforward."

Whereupon the Brutes soldier heads for a machine two down, after grabbing the hamster. It wiggles in his hands but he's not going to squish it by the looks of things. "Most things will go on the 'cotton or regular' setting, which is here. Light, medium and heavy soil levels are pretty self explanatory. If you're washing something fragile, turn the dial to 'delicate' instead." He points to a dial on the machine he's chosen. "Then you pick over on this dial how many times you want it to run your wash. This one's optional, but if it's very dirty a second wash is good." It is neatly labeled, conveniently! "It also has the soak options if you want it to just sit in the water for a while being soapy, my wife says it helps."

There's a moment's pause, a frown crossing his face, but he shakes it off. "Then you put the soap in this hole up here, the back of the container of soap will tell you how much to use, close the door firmly, and press this button here. About a half hour later, your items will be clean."

He tilts slightly to the side, frown returning, to eye the next machine. "...Or you can use the next one which apparently just has an auto-select option.. so I guess just toss everything in, press the button and pray."
