The most common consensus is that the Mayor's new lighting system in town involved gasses which gave off hydrogen sulfide and manganese fumes, causing mental instability and mass hysteria. Whether the theater riot and fire was accidental, caused by insanity, or a deliberate outraged reaction to discovering a (presumably accidental) mass-poisoning is unclear. Chemical deposits near the dry lakebed provide possible secondary confirmation of this story, but there is no direct evidence - no sign the Mayor used materials from near Lake Holly in his experiments or lamps - and the fire obscured most evidence. Individual stories of insanity, hallucination, depression and despair at the time widely vary, so an exact sequence of events is not agreed upon.
