C H A R A C T E R;
NAME: Susumu Yamazaki; in traditional Japanese fashion he introduces himself with his family name first, Yamazaki Susumu
CANON: Hakuouki
POINT IN CANON: The tail end of the first season of the anime, episode 12; his death on the ship during the Shinsengumi’s retreat to Edo
AGE: Young, probably very early 20s in Hakuouki. His age in reality was somewhere around 30 or so when he joined, however.
APPEARANCE: Yamazaki is a rather short man with short, somewhat spiky brown hair with a very thing ponytail at the back. He had light violet eyes and rather pale skin.
CANON HISTORY: The Wiki is here: but it’s woefully lacking, so:
Yamazaki was born in Osaka, and joined the Shinsengumi when they were looking for recruits under the leadership of Serizawa, in episode 6 of the prequel anime series Hakuouki Reimeiroku. He tells them that his father was an acupuncturist, and that he has a little bit of medical knowledge, which Hijikata says will be useful. He reveals several episodes later that he was born into the family of an acupuncturist, but had always longed to be a samurai and had impersonated a ronin in Kyoto and Osaka. But, he said, the more he tried to outwardly copy them, the further he drew from the true essence of a samurai. When told at recruitment that all Roshigumi members would be treated as warriors, regardless of their upbringing, Yamazaki felt that he could truly become a samurai with them. His loyalty to the corps was cemented that first day and he dedicated his entire life to their well-being, taking on the role of inspector to aid them more covertly but still fighting when and if it was needed. He developed a very strong bond of respect and loyalty to Hijikata, who, as far as we know, was the first person to consider him worthy of being a warrior. This bond remained until the end of his life.
No one knows anything more until Yamazaki appears as a spy in the first season of Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan (well, the games detail a good deal more, but since I don’t own a PSP I’m using anime knowledge alone xD). He dressed in his ninja outfit to deliver a message to Hijikata, and protected Chizuru from attackers so she could carry the message herself. Yamazaki is fine after his fight, however, and went back to his duties immediately. He is seen thereafter gathering as much information as he can for the Shinsengumi, as well as helping tend to the injured. In the OVA, Yamazaki decided to impersonate a ninja in order to protect Chizuru, who had taken on the role of an undercover geisha. He was her bodyguard, along with Saitou, and did an excellent job of protecting her, referring to her as his princess while fighting. His last appearance was to throw himself between Hijikata and Kazama in order to protect Hijikata, becoming mortally wounded in the process. He died on the ship on the retreat to Edo, after telling Chizuru to take care of the Shinsengumi in his place, since she was the only one he could trust with this duty.
Susumu Yamazaki | Hakuouki | 2/2
He is very respectful of all the captains, but especially Hijikata, whom he has a special fondness for. He is rather quiet and generally gentle, but can be impatient and taciturn as well. His dedication to the Shinsengumi is the most important thing to him, and he is willing to do whatever they need of him at any time. He seems to be close to the other members and to get along well with them, especially Saitou.
While quiet and gentle for the most part, Yamazaki is a tactical fighter capable of bloodshed with no hesitance when it is necessary. His history as an intelligence officer means he is adept at lying and pretending to be someone he’s not in order to gather information, and is very secretive and private in general. He is not fond of sharing information unless he needs to, and tends to keep most things to himself. This doesn’t mean that he’s as aloof as he appears, because he does care very deeply for those he’s close to.
Yamazaki’s level of loyalty and sacrifice for the Shinsengumi and for Hijikata, who had become a very close friend to him, is illustrated most in the episode I’m pulling him from. As Yamazaki is run through by sword to stop Hijikata from dying needlessly at the hands of Kazama, he asks Hijikata what he is doing, as he is the vice commander and therefore the most important of them, and cannot go risking himself unnecessarily. That he is willing to become grievously wounded in order to stop Hijikata from becoming the same or worse shows not only how dedicated he is to his cause but to his friend. While his level of respect and loyalty toward Hijikata is greater than that of the others, I think he would do the same for any of the captains if they needed him to, simply because, as he says, they are the more important pieces of the puzzle and thus the ones needed to further the Shinsengumi’s cause.
In the OVA, Yamazaki fights hard in order to protect Chizuru when she is being given a hard time. This shows that he does indeed become bothered by things, and that he is a protector at heart, doing whatever is necessary to keep those he cares about safe.
POINT OF DEPARTURE: --
ABILITIES: Yamazaki is a human, and as he never takes the Ochimizu even when critically wounded, he never picks up the abilities of the rasestsu like many of his comrades. He is a very skilled fighter. While he impersonates a ninja and wants to be one, he is not one in canon. However, he is able to fight and use stealth well enough to make this completely believable. He is trained in medicine, as his father was an acupuncturist, and he is an intelligence officer for the Shinsengumi, spying and running messages when needed. He is also useful to the Shinsengumi with his medical knowledge, and often helps Chizuru to care for the wounded.
INVENTORY; His green kimono (which bears no small resemblance to a bathrobe) and the hakama he was wearing on the ship. He also will have his sword with him, as well as a bit of the medicine Chizuru was trying to give him when he passed.
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? He’s coming from the time of his death, and he knows it. He’ll be arriving injured; able to move about okay but will tire pretty easily for awhile until he heals.
S A M P L E S;
FIRST PERSON: [At first, all that could be heard were shaking, raspy breaths from a man very close to death. They continued for quite awhile, until the person woke up slowly. After glancing around and realizing he was no longer on the ship to Edo, was worried for the others. He knew Chizuru would take care of them, as she’d promised, but…]
Yukimura-kun? I…cannot care for the others well, or help you with it, if I do take my medicine, remember?
[He tried to clear his throat against the raspiness of his voice, knowing it would do no good. But he needed to stop her from worrying. If she could hear him to begin with…]
My princess, there is no way I can protect you if you do not allow me to take my medicine.
[It was a joke, of course, but there was seriousness under it. He could protect no one if he died, after all.]
I hope that the others are all right. You should tell the fuckuchou for me that all is well and that I will be back to my duties as soon as I can be.
[Well. There was no sense in worrying about it now. He didn’t try to call for any of the others, not even Hijikata-san. He was simply too exhausted, and calling for Chizuru had weakened him. He fell into a fitful sleep, hoping she would come back soon.]
THIRD PERSON: Was this the afterlife? No, it didn’t seem to be; he was in a fair bit of pain, but it was nothing like before and he knew it wouldn’t be fatal. He definitely wasn’t on the ship any longer, either, and Yukimura-kun was nowhere in sight. He was glad of that; while he felt reasonably all right, there was still a rather large wound in his chest, and he hated that she’d had to see him this way.
The events leading up to their journey back to Edo still left him feeling a little hopeless. He believed in the Shinsengumi’s mission with his whole heart, but the way things were going worried him. Still, he hoped this would be a chance to make things right again. If he survived, he would do his best to help. He could probably get back to his intelligence work soon, when his wounds had healed, and there would of course be the watching over of Okita-san and any of the others who might become ill or injured…
His chest hurt. A lot. He hadn’t gotten the chance to drink the medicine Chizuru had been preparing for him, and it made him want to fall into unconsciousness again to escape the pain. But before that, he needed to make sure the others were safe, although he had no idea how to go about doing that in the state he was in.
“If I could…leave this bed…”
But he couldn’t, and he was too tired to try even if he’d wanted to. He would have to leave things to the others for now, until he was strong enough to move again, to do his duty.
