Personality
“It is what I do that teaches me what I am looking for...” - Pierre Soulages
Nilin Cartier-Wells, the Errorist agent simply known as Nilin, was once a vacant slate. Without memories, fear and anger, frustration overrode her personality. Her memories had been taken from her, eradicated as far as she knew. And yet, for all her memories were gone, she had the strength of will to remember her name. That in and of itself was surprising, for a full Sensen memorial wipe usually left nothing behind. But perhaps the rebellious nature of hers had been the key to holding onto something so simple.
Nilin joined a group of revolutionists known as Errorists who were rebelling against Memorize. While working for this group Nilin became a Memory Hunter. Memory Hunters seek out certain people whose memories are required to complete a certain activity the group wishes to accomplish. In this case, a Memory Hunter will hack someone’s Sensen to extract the information. But Nilin could do more than that. She could actually rewrite someone’s memories using her specialized hunt glove. All in all, one can say that Nilin was rebelling against the image of Neo-Paris, so focused on technology that allowed one to delete memories they did not like and reprogram memories of their choice.
One might think she chose the path of an Errorist because her parents had escaped into their work. They had left Nilin behind, an angry mother who blamed Nilin for a car accident that caused her to lose her leg - and it was Nilin’s fault, and a father who became so all consumed by his own work. What other choice did the young woman have?
Of course being an Errorist means that you become public enemy number one very quickly, and tend to be seen as a bad guy. But in all retrospect, Nilin isn’t a bad guy. Not really. Well, yes what she’s doing is considered shady and wrong. However, her reasons behind these actions aren’t of the nefarious sort. She really is a good person at heart. She’s fighting because she feels it’s the right thing to do. She has taken the path of an Errorist because she is trying to save the world from itself after seeing what it has done to itself. In her eyes, the people around the become blinded by Memorize and it’s ideals. She wants to pull the wool from their eyes. You can’t live in this ideal world where you can alter your memories just to suit your whims. It’s not right. And since she is responsible for this due to that childhood incident, she has made the fight extremely personal. More so than Edge, the leader of the Errorist.
Due to an incident during her activities as an Errorist, where Nilin caused the death of S.A.B.R.E. Force commander Captain Frank Forlan, the Errorist were hunted down and arrested. Nilin was captured at some unknown point in time and her memories were wiped clean. Or, at least, most of them. Having temporary amnesia has made Nilin’s life very difficult, but it has provided a drive for the former Errorist. She wanted desperately to regain all of her memories, willing to give all of her trust to the mysterious Edge since he was the first to speak to her and help her escape her situation at the start of the game. He was going to lead her to her memories, she was sure of that. And so once more she lends herself to his cause, hoping against all odds that it will reveal the truth about who she is and why her memories have been taken from her.
Her drive, her ambitious nature are very reminiscent of her mother’s personality. Scylla is a very strong willed and ambitious woman. The kind of woman who won’t let anything stand in her way. And because of this she focuses primarily on her business and very little on actually mothering Nilin. As sad is it sounds, that was the truth. As for Nilin’s father, he was a kind and caring man who wanted only to ease the world’s suffering, in this way Nilin is like her father. She wants to help people, not cause them pain and suffering. But by becoming so invested in the Sensen and what Memorize had to offer they were only hurting themselves more.
Her parents did love her, and Nilin loved her parents. The reason her family became so separated was because of their ambitions. Because they thought what they were doing was right. Scylla, who convinced herself she hated Nilin for causing the accident, became absolutely consumed with her work. She made her choice, and Nilin made her own. Before Nilin meets her mother, she thinks of the bitter CEO as an uber queen bitch, trash. But she doesn’t know why she is the way she is. When she enters her office, she is greeted with the sight of twisted metal, of warped car parts. And she see’s Scylla’s leg and, for all intents and purposes, puts the pieces together moment’s before entering her memory of the infamous crash. The accident that has made Scylla so bitter.
In the memory Nilin is acting much like the usual child, wanting desperately to get at the toy that her mother bought her for her birthday. She hits her mother’s seat, yells at her mother, and so on. Scylla yells reprimands at her, like any mother does, even engages the child safety lock. But she takes a softer tone, explaining that she is doing this to protect her. However when she reaches back to look at her little one their car is t-boned and both suffer in the accident. Nilin’s lip is split open, and her mother’s leg is crushed. While in pain Scylla tells Nilin that the incident is all her fault.
Nilin remixes her mother’s memory, but the truth of the situation is not lost to Nilin. She now knows that Scylla is her mother and that she caused the accident by being a rambunctious child. But after remixing her mother’s memory to make her guilty of the crash. While remixing her mother’s memory she is able to see a softer side of the woman. This side of her is also seen outside of the remixing. A less bitter woman.
They do make up, of course, and now that her mother is on her side, Nilin finds that she has the strength to go on even though she feels guilty about remixing her mother’s memories. Life may have pulled them apart, but Nilin will always Scylla’s daughter.
No one said being an Errorist was going to be easy. No one said changing someone’s memories was going to be easy.
As for Nilin’s father, who also became absorbed in his work, he spent more time with Nilin. Charles practically spoiled the little girl, or so it is strongly hinted. He made a lot of time for her, actually developed the memorial remixing for her. After the car accident, Charles couldn’t stand to see both his wife and daughter suffering. That’s why the Sensen Glove is created, and with it the first memory remix. He remixed Nilin’s memory to make the accident just an accident, not her fault, really, just bad judgment on her mother’s part. It is his prototype glove that Nilin’s is based off of and that is why Nilin can remix memories. But by successfully remixing Nilin’s memory lead Charles to see his vision brought to life. Edit memories, make people happy, remove suffering. At least, that’s what he wanted. It’s just not... what happened.
Nilin’s father kept most of her memories, the majority of which are her childhood memories. These he kept possibly to keep safe, probably to remind himself why he’s doing this. His life’s work was to save his daughter’s life. Removing her painful memories, to make sure she never suffers again. Yes, Nilin found this disgusting, and yes it appalled her, but she felt sympathy for her father. It was with a heavy heart that she went into his memories of a most important day 20.3 years ago. She watched the memory of her father altering her own memories, making sure that little Nilin was okay before sending her off. The adult Nilin, however, must actually hack the remix glove, deviling deeper into her father’s memories.
From here she is back to the car crash, revisiting that memory all over again. She get’s to witness how her father altered the memory for her as a child. The memory remix he does is much the same as the one she had set up in her mother’s memories, except that he made it so that the accident never happened. Her mother, however, never allowed him to alter her memories as Nilin has come to understand. Although this must have shocked her, Nilin still had to remix the memory so that her father killed her as a child. But the aftermath is too much for Nilin. She can’t bear to see the way her father is suffering. His pain is just too much, too real. When Edge demands that she break her father she just can’t. She steps toward her father, who has to touch her hand to know that she’s really alive.
These are the people who have made Nilin the woman she is today. A mother who loved her too little, a father who loved her too much. Parents so absorbed in their work. It made Nilin’s childhood a lonely one. Yes, as she grew, she made friends, small images earned for getting certain trophies reveal small glimpses into Nilin’s past before becoming an Errorist. But it’s clear to see that she’s grown to also be very reserved and guarded. She’s careful in picking who to trust and she tries to make sure there’s distance between her and those she works with.
This Errorist is one who has worked alone for quite some time. According to the Mnesist Memories, Nilin may have wiped the memories of those who knew her before she became a memory hunter, as if trying to hide her identity - maybe that was just the case. She doesn’t want anyone to know that she is a Cartier-Wells, since it would bring much too much trouble to her family. It was bad enough that the heir had turned left the safety and security of Memorize to become a Memory Hunter, so why bring shame to her family but letting it become absolutely publicly known. It could also be seen as a way to secure protection of her identity.
Even in a team one will quickly realize that Nilin is just very independent. She prefers her solitude to working with a team. She will, of course, work with others if she must. She seems to work best with someone relaying information to her and then sending her on her way. Of course, that isn’t to say she can’t work with others, she can, it’s just that Errorists seem to be more often than not sent out a single person per mission. Her fighting style, her abilities are all very independent and give her a wide range of things she can simply do all on her own.
Nilin does a lot of internal monologuing throughout the course of her journey. It is her way of setting the stage for herself. It is her way of coping with the current events. She does a lot of revisiting, reprocessing. She needs to make sure that what she’s doing is right. And it’s her way to keep from going mad. She reveals her doubts and fears in these moments. She shows her weakness in these moments. She carries around many burdens, mostly made up of guilt and pain. This guilt often gives her a sense of melancholy, but can you blame her? She has caused so much pain and suffering. She caused a man to kill himself for god’s sake. But she does not dwell for too long on these matters. No, by the time she has finally destroyed H30, she has regained a sense of self. She has come to her own conclusions, and most importantly she has decided to finally move on.
Nilin has always had this loud mouth and cocky attitude, or so Kid X-Mas claims. She’s very vocal when facing obstacles and Edge is talking to her. She talks back an awful lot, making sarcastic comments and snide remarks. She back talks without worry for the consequences, even makes bad jokes and puns when the opportunity arrives. But it isn’t exactly without caution, however. Only people Nilin has grown to trust get to see this side of her. Only people she has known for some time get to see that side of her.
Rarely will you see Nilin really smile, although she half smiles once or twice. It’s only when she becomes comfortable with those around her does she finally get to that point. Occasionally one will note that Nilin will make certain remarks when she’s highly emotional. She snaps at Edge rather frequently when he pushes too much for her to just keep going. Like when she wishes to save Bad Request, Edge is fairly straightforward about how it’s a waste of time. But Nilin, Nilin refuses to leave him behind.
Speaking of Edge, well that is a whole ‘nother can of worms. Edge was Nilin’s guiding voice. The mysterious founder of the Errorist movement has been with Nilin throughout her entire adventure while she tried to get back her memories, her life. It wasn’t until the very end of the game that we find out that Edge is H30, Humanity 3.0, Charles Cartier-Wells greatest creation... and saddest. H30 had created a personality of his own, becoming bitterer and bitterer with each memory that was deleted, each nasty memory people got rid of. He... owes his exist to Nilin, sadly. Because Nilin was the first to have a memory altered, the data was stored in H30. H30's first memories are the tears of a girl, and that child is Nilin.
Nilin’s relationship with Edge was a strong one. A bond that had remained even after Nilin lost her memory. He reached out to her the moment she was stable, and did everything in his power to help her escape. He guided her each step of the way. And so the revelation that she would have to destroy him was, perhaps, the hardest moment of her life. She despairs at the thought of facing him, at the thought of losing her dearest friend. She is afraid to lose him. And he is afraid as well, but not enough to stop the fight. It is a necessary evil. But he saved her life, and it is time she save him. He wants nothing more than to die. He is tired of remembering, he is tired of hurting for others, doesn’t he deserve death too? And Nilin, she is the only one who can grant him his ending. The fight is difficult against H30, but she shuts down the program. Everyone’s memories, no matter how painful, will be returned to the host. Nilin walks away with her memories intact, and she will never forget Edge/H30. If it were not for him, Nilin would never have gotten her memories back, she would have never become the woman she is today.
