NAME: Shirogane Naoto (Naoto Shirogane by Western custom)
CANON: Persona 4 (PS2 version)
POINT IN CANON: Post true-end
AGE: 16 (Birthdate April 27, 1995)
APPEARANCE: Naoto is a slight person, five feet tall, a hundred pounds soaking wet, with grey eyes, and blue-black hair. She is almost always wearing pants, a button-down shirt, a tie of some sort, and a blue pageboy hat; a very snappy dresser. When she smiles, which is somewhat rare, she has an extremely charming and engaging smile. She also almost always wears a chest binder, concealing her true gender. Very few people would see her as a woman without careful scrutiny or being told.
CANON HISTORY: http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Naoto_Shirogane
A few notes about Naoto’s backstory from headcanon: She started taking cases on her own when she was between thirteen and fourteen, finally being on her own by fifteen. No one questioned this, because of the power and popularity of the Shirogane family. Her grandfather’s power is also how she is able to legally carry a gun in spite of her age and non-affiliation with the police.
Also, her attendance at Yasogami was the first time she actually attended school since her parents died. Her grandfather pulled her out of school, and she enjoyed the private tutoring so much that she never went back. Academically, she is at a third-year or possibly higher level, but was placed in the first year due to her somewhat socially-stunted nature.
CANON PERSONALITY:
If there is one thing that would describe Naoto, it would be duality. She is wise beyond her years, but she is still a child. In one version of canon, it is said that she has the ‘body of a child and brain of a genius.’ The description is extremely apt. She has her public persona, the slightly cold, hard-boiled Detective Prince, but she also has her private feelings, rarely shown to anyone. She is passionate, caring, and emotional, but she is also cold and aloof. At her very core, however, she is a seeker of Truth, working to put together puzzles to find the truth of the matter.
On the surface, Naoto is calm, rational, and a bit cold. When in her detective mode, she asks questions with a flat, emotionless tone, and patiently waits for the answers. She can also be more than a bit demanding, striding boldly up to criminals and murderers, confronting them with the truth of their crimes. She is not put off by much, and is notably the only party member who does not seem to be nervous around or put off by Kanji at all. She also is many times awkward around people, pulling back into an aloof demeanor to disguise her insecurities. She seems somewhat insensitive to others’ feelings, however, is mostly just unaware due to her lack of socialization.
However, if someone gets past the surface, Naoto does have strong emotions and longs for deep connections with people. In the middle of her Shadow’s rant, one line stands out: Give me a reason to stay! Naoto feels deeply that, as a detective, she is dismissed after each case that she has put so much emotion and passion into. When she eventually makes connections with people, she cares for them deeply, and struggles to balance her care for her friends and her passion for her career. In the anime, she realizes that she has put the case above her friends and their safety, and it bothers her deeply. No matter the attention she gets from the press, from other students at her school, and from police departments, she still feels lonely until she meets the Investigation Team in canon. Through her participation in the events of canon, she finds a home and a family, much to her own happiness.
She is a very magnetic personality, even when being aloof. Many students in the school, even without realizing her true gender, send her love notes, which she dismisses, derisively wondering how one can declare love without actually knowing the object of one’s affection. However, when you get to know her, she has a lighter side, one that is scared of ghost stories, loves high places, embarrassed to be weak, and loves robot manga and tinkering with electronics. In contrast, however, she snaps harshly when called a child, looked down on, or called useless.
One of her biggest struggles is with her gender. She has covered up her true gender for many years, choosing pants and a chest binder, as well as a male school uniform instead of more typical feminine clothing. She believes that she will not be able to get the respect she craves as a woman in a male-dominated field. At the end of the game, she is still extremely insecure about her gender, wearing her usual clothes and still using male reflexive pronouns for herself, but she is less worried about people finding out her true nature.
The weight of her family’s detective legacy sits heavily on Naoto’s shoulders as well. Her years alone caused her to start solving mysteries for the Shirogane name, not for herself. Through her grandfather’s interference in canon, she remembers (after calling the entire situation childish many times) how much she loves solving mysteries and puzzles both for her own sake, and the the fact that the puzzles are there, and in embracing that, she becomes a more passionate and effective detective.
POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/A
ABILITIES: Deductive reasoning, academic study, electronic tinkering, English language, marksmanship, vast knowledge of detective novels and action manga.
She also has the ability to summon her Persona, Yamato-Takeru. A Persona is a manifestation of a person’s soul, a fighting creature-of-sorts that personifies how the user presents themselves to the world. Naoto’s persona relies on magic and ranged attacks (her weapon is her pistol) and does high damage. From her canon point, she has the highest-level light and dark magic spells, as well as others. (Mamudoon (Dark), Mahamaon (Light), Megadolaon (Almighty Damage, hard to resist), Mudo Boost, Hama Boost,, Mind Charge (Powers up spells), Tempest Slash (large damage to one enemy), and Vorpal Blade (Heavy physical damage to all enemies).) A Persona is a spirit who fights on behalf of its wielder, however, any damage done to the Persona is also felt by the person who summons it. As it is a part of Naoto’s soul, in theory it could be summoned anywhere there is enough ambient magic or power to bring him forth.
INVENTORY; Blue pageboy hat, clothes, wallet with some cash, credit cards, ID and a photo of the Investigation Team, cell phone, Police ID, Fortune Tarot card, blue oval-framed glasses, pistol with six bullets
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? Naoto is one hell of an amazing detective. And she won’t let you forget it.

PROSE SAMPLE:
Here!
ACTIONSPAM SAMPLE:
Naoto could not figure out why everyone seemed to be acting so intoxicated after that terrible King’s Game. There was not a drop of alcohol served to any of them, she made absolutely certain of that before participating in anything at all. Watching them all, so uninhibited, completely ignoring everything else that was going on, well, it just made no sense. She had tried to bring it all back to the problem at hand, but the only answer she got was some strange story about televisions and … personas, was it? Imbeciles.
However, there was something in the back of her mind as she helped Yukiko, Chie and Rise back to the hotel that just would not go away. The story was fantastical, but would Yukiko especially come up with something so strange for no particular reason? Did all of them actually believe the story, or were they just making fun of her? Things made less sense the more she thought about it.
Finally getting to the hotel and packing the girls off to bed, she sat up in a chair for most of the night, mulling it all over in her head. Perhaps she was the imbecile. Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth. Was that the truth? Were these people actually able to go inside a television to another world beyond it? The television did have a key part to play in the entire mess. Everyone who had been kidnapped was on television in some manner. And then she realized what she had to do. No one else could do this, she had to follow it through to its end. Getting on television was the easy part. What happened next, well, that was going to be the challenge, and a challenge she was absolutely ready for.
