Illuminant Hunt/Liminal Space Plotting

Other than combat and bargaining prompts, these will be set up to require as little mod intervention as possible. Please do let us know if you’re going to need mod input somewhere else.

I. Fighting Illuminants

Not all of the Illuminants will be perfectly contained by the summoning measures being used. Red, Yellow, Indigo and Violet are all capable of breaking out of containment immediately, or nearly so, and will need to be dealt with as quickly as possible. (Particularly Red, who is potentially capable of undoing bindings on the others.)

II. Source Destruction
As for taking the Illuminants down at their sources, that’ll be a several-pronged affair by necessity:

*Red’s cave contains a dragon whose flame ignores elemental resistance and can inspire rage.
*Orange’s dragon scale would require tracking Orange themself down first, and that is pretty unlikely.
*Yellow’s golden lake needs both the water evaporated and the gold melted down, and both of those things are capable of inflicting jealousy effects on whoever’s dealing with them.
*Green’s tree has elemental creatures defending it, but should otherwise be fairly simple. The same is true of Blue’s frozen lake.
*Indigo’s library resists magical attacks, and can summon magical constructs to fight back. This is also a prime opportunity to raid some books.
*Violet’s source is twofold, as Violet draws both from the throne of Dolorosa and the royal family line. PLEASE NOTE, when planning who will deal with this source, whether the individuals or group intend to attack the queen directly (which will mean having to fight Griffon Knights) or leave her be (which may allow for Violet’s survival).

III. Bargaining with Rose

We don’t know where Rose’s source is. Rose also doesn’t want to hurt anyone, and isn’t capable of getting out of captivity unaided.

She’s willing to trade for her freedom, and share everything she knows about Orange’s location in exchange. It’s up to the Travelers whether they want to take this bargain.

IV. Meanwhile, in Liminal Space…

Potential avenues for exploration in Liminal proper include, but are not necessarily limited to: The dual nature of Liminal Space; the Floor and ectoplasm; how Familiar Faces function as anchors; the function of dungeon spaces.

We are also more than happy to explore whatever deep-dive questions you have about Liminal Space’s inner workings, so if you’d like to poke at something that’s not listed here, let us know and we’ll incorporate it!

Sabetha is mostly here to do the summoning and binding so please keep her alive, but once shit hits the fan, she can act as a debuff bard with Siren Song, which she'll be using to afflict the Illuminants with conditions/emotions counter to their source of power. She also has Questing Country spells to twist an area into a nightmarescape - and to turn people against their allies, if we end up having to deal with more than one evil wizard at once.

Minako is on lockdown and/or wizard-smiting duty. In addition to the relevant Liminal skills, she has her Questing Country Champion magic, which gives her domain over seals and the administration thereof, including sealing away skills and/or escape paths. Alternatively, she has Armageddon, AKA "Damage Cap? What Damage Cap?: The Spell," so she can potentially explode multiple Illuminants at once, although she's limited to maybe three castings.

Naoya can help with the summoning and binding, but if needed he can do some healing and AOE nuking (Megidolaon is a great skill). He can monitor health and such with Control Panel, go on the physical offensive with his naga form, and use sand elementalism to shred things if needed.

... And if he needs to escape he's going to use his fae form and gtfo.

Would the bond between Violet and the royal family line be ended permanently if it was disrupted, or could Violet just attach themselves back to the next member of the royal family?

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
If Violet was killed while the link was disrupted, the death would be permanent.

If Violet survived, they could re-establish the link.

Does the queen know about the link? If so, how does she feel about it?

...Actually, let me put this question in the correct place.

Gil plans on going after Indigo. With Pillar Resistance to offset magical effects aimed at him and a Lunar Presence (ie Thorne) to render him mostly impossible to defeat (though not, however, to kill) he'll be focused on causing Major Widespread Damage rather than specific focus.

That said, would System Crash work on the library in any way? I don't remember if I asked this earlier.

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
System Crash would not destroy the library but would disrupt its magical defenses.

[personal profile] breakaleginhalf 2020-04-28 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
How thoroughly would this disrupt the magical constructs? And would it lower the library's resistance to magical attacks?

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
If it was used right away, the constructs would be unable to form. If it was used after they appeared, they would be unable to alter their targets or behavior but would still be there and potentially dangerous.

The resistance to magic, alas, would not be disrupted.

Is there anything specific he'd need to interact with in order to crash it? Or is the whole place Magic As Hell enough that he can just touch a thing and go?

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The system he would be crashing permeates the entire interior of the library.

Deedee can lob fireballs - which are actually fire-elemental if it matters - making her a natural choice to burninate Green.

Pinya was going to go after green as well! A very bad no good part of white magic is being able to corrupt/poison nature and disrupt the flow of energies.

She's also very good with poisons and is very used to having to put down angry elementals.

Casper's going after Blue - he's a natural choice since cold can't hurt him. (Magical cold is an unclear maybe, but either way he'd be more resistant.) He can cast Cloudkill (though that's under Blue magic) and fly above, and as a last ditch effort he can and will attempt to trigger a Harbinger transformation since that's just in general a lot of lava and fire.

Oh duh also Siren Song, though if anyone's coming with him he'll warn them first.

Hajime will be going after Blue because he ought to be able to handle that okay, and Sento will be going after Red since he's got experience in holding off rage and fighting for love and peace and all that good stuff.

Raidou will be going after Violet. He'll want to at least try explaining the situation to the Queen first, but even if that's not possible, he will be altering her bond with Violet, attaching Violet's end to either another person of her choosing or to herself (he could temporarily attach her to himself, but he would rather avoid this if at all possible because it would make him look like he wants to use her power himself, and he really would rather not).

The throne is theoretically easier to deal with, in that it could probably be Declarified or destroyed, although he'd still rather explain this to the Queen first if there's the opportunity.

I think I’m sending Chloe after Red’s source. She’ll be bringing her huge cannon, ability to always shoot first, and also a ridiculously large Hammerspace if anyone else wants to bring anything.

Chloe and Cassandra are messing around with the ovoids (after a bit of "magnets, how the fuck do they work?" lol). I know electricity and magnetism variables exist when the shells are interfaced, but what kind of readings would they get? Is it different depending on if it's an already opened egg or not?

Re: IV. Meanwhile, in Liminal Space...

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-05-18 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
The readings indicate an incredible amount of stability and balance. That is, fluctuations in energy will always read them as "grounded", although evidence has shown current could be passed through them within the floor.

Open them, and they'll read as totally null - not grounded, but neutral, almost invisible - except that if they are open, and whatever object is inside them has not been taken out, they will start to close again.

If they are opened, a new object is placed inside, and current is run through them, they will start to close - as long as that item has been made liminally permanent or stable. If it hasn't, both the item and the egg will puff into nonexistence.

What does the Illuminants breaking out of containment mean in practice? Like, are they now loose in liminal space and freely moving around wherever they want, or are they still confined to the Room but able to use their abilities, etc? Or something else?

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
At least at first, it would mean confined in the room but able to use some, but not all, of their abilities. There's a possibility some of them could get out completely, but no guarantee either way.

Is the queen aware of the link between her and Violet, and if so how does she feel about it? Does she draw power from it as well?

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
She suspects but is not fully aware, and would be unhappy with it. It does benefit her, but it isn't something she chose or approves of.
capital_asset: (Go!)

[personal profile] capital_asset 2020-04-28 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming Raidou's relevant plot skill requires both ends of the bond to be sapient and/or living:

DIGNITY: THE GAP BETWEEN PEOPLE:Nobody really knows each other. Once a week (after the Jaunt, once a Jaunt), you may transfer one end of any magical bond or relationship which connects two or more beings, selecting a new person or spirit for it to connect to. If the newly connected targets are willing, this is permanent. If unwilling, it lasts until you release it or use the power again. This also gives him the ability to detect or perceive other people's bonds via close contact, either by observing them at close range or making skin contact; however, this ability does not extend to Arcana bonds/Marked Harmony. Plot Infiltrator-exclusive skill.

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sapient, yes.

But it would work if Violet was bodily dead.

It would not work on the bond to the throne itself, or if the Queen was dead (although killing the Queen would break that bond and make the skill use unnecessary).

[personal profile] capital_asset 2020-04-28 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Would destroying the throne have an effect on Dolorosa itself?

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Only insofar as any powers Violet may or may not have anchored on the throne would cease their effect.

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-28 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
It might also outrage some people, but we assume you meant tangible, material effects more than emotional reactions to a beloved symbol of the monarchy being defaced.

Would there be sufficient time to approach the queen to talk to her about any of this, or would she be liable to be skeptical even if there was?

[personal profile] powersthatare 2020-04-29 12:28 am (UTC)(link)

There's time if people take the time - how skeptical the queen will be will depend too much on specifics to be predicted in advance.
