Questing Country: The Next Jaunt.

QUESTING COUNTRY

July 22nd - August 26th

Nobody knows quite how Questing Country works. Any species who are capable of lucid dreams can enter it. Six Known Worlds are connected to it - planets which may or may not remember one another in the waking world, but whose Chosen have formed alliances through Questing Country for thousands of years. The landscape changes, but the place is real - anyone who dreams of Questing Country vanishes from their bed, and wakes up with the wounds, marks, or treasures they earned there. But a few things are clear: it taps into the most powerful beliefs in the minds of sentient beings. When those beliefs are too dangerous, Questing Country births strange talking beasts who lend abilities to the young, the only people hopeful and naive enough to believe one person really can change the world - and so, they’re the only people who ever have the chance to change it.

But there’s more to Questing Country than the Champions it anoints and their dangerous lives and uncertain fates. These troublesome beliefs - they take shape, too. The Fire Mushrooms range out from the place called Nuclear Winter. Hordes of Men in Black come from Conspiracy Country. If they’re not stopped here, they gain power in the dreams of the Known Worlds… and those are only a few of the more obvious ones.

Sometimes, though, the untapped powers of Questing Country find other shapes, as well. There are unstable nodes of energy called Valences that appear only a few times a generation… and when they do, Champions and Oracles and Adversaries all fling themselves into Questing Country with wild abandon. Because every Champion has some belief they’re fighting for, some hope they want to come true… and deep in their hearts, every Champion believes that one day, if they’re strong enough and pure enough, it will. The Valence is that belief, taken shape, the hope of hopes, the power to make dreams come true in an instant… but because Champions believe they have to prove themselves worthy, well, they’re right about that, too. To gain the Valence, they first have to succeed in a series of tests, tests that will send them against their friends and allies from across the worlds...

Matt's Four Infiltrators: All Open to Backstory CR!

Tim: sixteen-year old elven sniper Tim moonlights as Champion of Locks. Together with his cardinal Spirit Animal, there's no defense he can't sneak through - or strengthen! - no secret he can't hide, no contract he can't bind. Before he releases his bowstring, his catchphrase is "Locked on," and his keen-eyed focus backs that up a hundred percent. But he's also close to becoming an Oracle already despite his young age, powers fading, as the secrets he takes on sap his power and add to his insight. Tim is devoted to his Bonded companions - maybe too devoted, as he'll do questionable things in the name of helping them.

Remy: young Hecatite Remy is the Adversary of Fortune. Luck and Wealth both are his enemies and the tools he uses against others, along with Karras, an angry dragonling who occasionally assumes his form and spoils his plans. Remy's ultimate goal is revolution on Hecate, where he feels tyrannical restrictions which are the opposite of the freedom of Questing Country are strangling people. While Hecatite society is regimented and rational, few Hecatites react to it the way he does...

Joscelin: Joscelin is human, either the Oracle of Devotion or the Oracle of Shackles, and either way is prone to behaving like he's still a Champion and getting in over his head. His familiar is a brown finch named Hanna.

Souji: a Gorgon mask-maker's apprentice, and the Oracle of Faces, Souji considers himself semi-retired, exploring Questing Country but not doing nearly so much as others to interfere with it. A lie detector, capable of determinuing emotion at a glance, with uncanny knowledge of others identities, Souji can be un-nerving, until he dons the appropriate mask, at which point it's almost impossible not to trust him. A foo lion named Shisa is his familiar, a frightening looking cat-dog who often appears to be a terracotta statue.

Oho, Remy... While Kanji never went as far as looking for revolution - damn, he feels him there. Butted his head against the rules and regulations and expectations himself, and his 'finding ones' own destiny' side of his thing is hard in a society like that. Only Kan recovered his Hope, so... Kind of got a bit of a two sides of the same coin thing, feels like to me?

Definitely. Maybe they worked together when Remy was still a Champion?

I like it :B Zoe has had a long and colorful Champion career, I'm sure she's met him and worked with him before, and liked him ^^

And probably thinks he works too hard, now, and he's going to get his ass killed :| Idiot kid.

HaHA. I knew it!

Anyway, it looks like we both have plotting roles for this, with Thorne as Champion of Butterflies and Joscelin as Oracle of Shackles, so we probably should figure out if they know each other etc

I kind of like the idea that me might have tried and failed to mentor her? Like, he became an Oracle around the time she became a Champion, but he;s so bad at Oracle-ing that despite trying to look out for her he sort of left her to fend for herself ./ just fought beside her. So, friends still, but not really mentor-student like they ought to be? if that sounds cool.

It sounds great! And really it's just as well that it wasn't mentor-student like it should be, since that way Thorne won't displace her mentor emotions onto him. But yeah, I can just picture Joscelin sort of waiting on the sidelines while she fights, knowing that he's supposed to be helping her but distracted by how much he wants to beat the thing up himself until he's finally all 'fuck this shit' (only in better language) and runs into the fight without any magic but a pair of daggers.

you know, as champion of butterflies, she's gonna have butterfly knives, which aren't the same as daggers, but

What if the only thing he managed to teach her was how to stab people?

That would make sense.

Which could still lead to Cassiline combat training shenanigans in the future, too...

Yes. And she'll never be a fraction as good as him, because she's not a fighting build and also not training since she was ten, but learning Cassiline fighting, eee.
