Test Drive #14

Welcome to the Synodiporia Test Drive Meme! Below the cuts there are two new prompts, and here are the prompts from previous test-drives, which you’re still welcome to use in this post. When you comment, be sure you specify what prompt you want to play with, and please put up your own threadstarter - it makes for a much more friendly environment that a forest of bare toplevels! OCs are especially welcome! Please take a quick look at our Directory & familiarize yourself with the concept and setting of the game before you jump in.

Our upcoming app round runs April 24th-30th. Our next Jaunt, Neapolitan Beach Vacation, is a Roman-era romp with drama, comedy, and romance, a light-hearted chance for Travelers to catch their breath between metaplot-heavy, more serious events. Our next Walkabout (a more player-driven alternative event, for those not interested in the Jaunt) will be a survival/exploration event set on a ruined island Travelers visited in the distant past... Both Jaunt & Walkabout will begin May 7th & run for approximately four weeks.

Prompt #39 is set in a synaesthetic Liminal Space where sounds become shapes and motion becomes music.

Prompt #40 is set in the Marches of Purgatory Jaunt, a contested kingdom in the afterworld where Angels, Demons, and Sithen (immortal conscientious objectors) barter over sins, virtues, and lost souls.

Prompt #39

The floors in Liminal Space are paths made of keyboards and fretboards, or stepping-stones across prismatic pools made of drums and cymbals, and they make noise accordingly. The walls, colored liquid glass, vibrate with sound, creating patterns of jagged, angry exclamations (it was a rough Jaunt), smooth soothing waves of pastels, or, at particularly apt descriptions, dislodging bubbled sculptures of the pictures discussion paints. It’s almost impossible, no matter how hard one tries, to create something discordant - and equally impossible to create silence or bland color.

Prompt #40

The Vanity Fair is a day’s flight away from Melasurei and the burning river it bridges. In a field of gently-waving asphodel flowers, underneath an impressionistic sky with swirling stars and half a hundred waxing and waning moons, a galactic spiral of colored tents is centered around a gradient-shifting bonfire in which smoke-images flicker, curl, and disperse. Within the tents, hooded souls, undead immortals, and various celestial beings sell their services, Sins & Virtues, scraps of disconnected memory and personality, and other ephemera. There are fruit that can only been grown in tilled fields irrigated with tears, blessed or cursed objects, the indentured dead themselves, and then, of course, the bonfire itself, fueled by wood from Hell, grown on regrets, mistakes, and impure thoughts. Vendor or customer, everyone here wants something, and everything here is something someone wants.

Hibiki Kuze | Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

[... It's nice, in comparison to what he's been seeing the past few days. He's still not unconvinced that what he's seeing (and hearing) isn't a dream, and to be honest, he's not sure he cares all that much. It's a welcome reprieve from the state of the world and from the Septentriones attacking. At first, Hibiki just kind of watches as colors bubble and dance throughout the Liminal Space from speech.

Eventually, though, he can't help himself, he's stepped onto one of the keyboard paths and... well, he's not the best dancer, if one's being honest. He'd even admit as such--all he's doing is just trying to mimic some of the movements he's seen Hinako perform during their rare bits of downtime, his movements here producing rainbow bursts and pretty melodies. Eventually, Hibiki turns to the nearest passerby, his blue eyes alight with pure glee.]

Isn't this incredible?!

Kanji's been humming a little bit of a tune to himself, harmonising with the melodies that are popping up around him and leaving trails of colour as he wanders -

He grins at the exclamation. "One'f the cooler ones we've had, yeah," he says.

Hibiki grins, although he's still tapping his foot against the path--it's just too fun! "I can't say I really mind being taken away from where I was for a little while if there's cool places like this to run around in." It's a lot nicer than seeing the wrecks that were currently Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, if one asked him.

(If only Daichi and Io were here to see this place--or even Airi and Hinako.)

"So, been around a while, I take it?"

Okay, Kanji likes this guy's attitude. (And his hoodie. But that's a completely different issue.) He smiles, and gives an affirmative nod. "Yeah, there's been a few that've been pretty cool. You shoulda seen the paintin' one we had about a year ago... I've been here a bit longer than that."

If nothing else, it was that kind of attitude that kept him from going crazy back home, considering the circumstances. ... But that wasn't really important, given the here and now, was it? "Ooh, really? What was that one like? And, uh, how long? If you don't mind me asking."

He shifts from tapping his toes to bouncing on the balls of his feet a little, before he adds, "My name's Hibiki, by the way--Hibiki Kuze. What's yours?"

"Kanji Tatsumi. Good to meet ya, man," he says with a nod, a faint chime backing his words up for now. "And wouldn'ta brought it up if I minded ya askin'. Time's kinda crazy here, but goin' by what most people do, year and a coupla months? There's folks who've been doin' this shit for at least two years, probably nearly three." He looks up into the rainbows and melodies chiming across the ceilings. Damn, it's been a hell of a year. "Things change a hell of a lot. The stuff I was talkin' about? Whole space was full of ... little flyin' balls you could walk around on, and magic paintbrushes that let you make things you painted. Probably still my favourite."

"Mm, good to meet you too! But sheesh, that's a really long time..." Hibiki follows Kanji's gaze to the ceilings, but looks back down when he starts talking about the other Liminal Space. "That sounds like it would've been a blast! I'm not really good at painting, though. Music's more my forte."

...That one rather goes over his head, sadly. "Yeah, you get good moments like that. Mosta the time it's kinda confusin', but sometimes?"

He hums a little and watches orange notes scroll across a wall.

"Confusing's fun."
