Test Drive #0.

Welcome to the Synodiporia Test Drive Meme! Below the cut there are four prompts to get you started: the first is if you’d like to test what intro-ing a new character is like, the second if you’d like to just chat and get CR with other prospective players just before the game’s starting event takes place, and the third and fourth for threaders looking for more active challenges to play in the game’s backstory - a bit of a look at what getting involved in this game’s plot would look like.

When you comment, be sure you specify what prompt you want to play with, and please put up your own threadstarter - it makes for a much more friendly environment than a forest of bare toplevels!

Before you start, we’d like you to please take a quick look at the game’s Concept, its Rules, and the Liminal Space & Previous Universes pages, just to give you the background, so you know what you’re getting into. And if you’re looking for more information, the Directory is here and the Reserves page is here.

Have fun!

Prompt #1: Liminal Space: New Arrivals

It seems to you that you’ve just stepped through a door, and you can feel the faint breeze of it blowing behind you.

You’ve just stepped into a mansion as imagined by MC Escher. This is the grand foyer, and zigzagging staircases with gilt balustrades curl impossibly along the corners, leading to a ballroom on the right wall, a theater on the left, or a fire-lit banqueting hall on the ceiling, far more rustic than the rest of the mansion looks. The far wall is a scattered collection of doors and windows facing all directions and opening who-knows where. Outside the windows you can see a beach, a mist-shrouded forest, and a starry sky. One door has a sheaf of papers nailed to it. Another has blood trickling out from beneath the doorframe.

When you look behind you, however, there is no door there. Nor, in fact, is there a wall in the traditional sense. Instead, there’s a marble-tiled bath-house.

In all of these places, whatever direction they happen to be facing with respect to tradition gravity, are people in strange clothing. Most of them seem to be looking relatively bored or restless, and only a very few seem at all bothered by the notion that the laws of physics seem to be being held in abeyance - mostly, the people standing nearest to you.

Most disturbing of all, beside the quiet murmur of conversation in your ears, you can also hear voices casually exchanging small talk inside your head.

After a moment, there’s a lull in most of the audible conversations, and a large portion of the room turns and looks your way. Someone -one of the voices in your head - says

Look at that. A new pack of Fools just arrived.

Prompt #2: Liminal Space: Everyone Else

This time, liminal space has manifested as a mansion as imagined by MC Escher. Behind you, there’s a marble-tiled bath-house.

It’s up to you to find a way to amuse yourself. You’ve been here thirty-six hours, longer than any of your previous Jaunts between worlds has taken, and since the food in the banquet hall vanishes the moment it’s out of your sight (even if it’s inside you), you’re starting to get hungry. When is the portal going to appear?

Prompt #3: Alternities: Locked Rooms In Moebius

You wake up in a new world, but by now you’re familiar with that. Only… something’s wrong. You didn’t step through any portal. You’re lying on a cold surface with something draped over you, and you can hear confused murmuring coming from your left and your right, maybe above and below you too, and you hurt.

You sit up, shrugging off the dingy once-white cloth draped over you. You’re in a morgue. All the alcoves are open, and in many of them, other Travelers are stirring and waking up. Some of them are wild-eyed. Some are blood-spattered. Every last one is criss-crossed with unfamiliar white lines of scarring.

On the slab in the center of a room is a clock. The hands indicate that it is 3:01. A collection of bloody-edged tools - knives and separators and saw and scalpels - sits beside it.

There is one door out, up half a flight of stairs in one corner, and no windows. The door has been barred, and all around the edges doorstops have been jammed in - wedge-toed shoes, folded sheafs of paper, a length of rubber hosing - anything that will fit in the narrow gap between door and frame, used to create a seal.

Scratched into the paint on the door are the words In the name of Blessed Elua, listen to me this time and stay inside. Don’t go out there. Just wait. Please. -JV

Somewhere out there in the distance, close enough to be audible but far enough away to be quiet, barely audible over the hum of the fluorescent lights, there’s a loud, ragged scream, and then the distant voice begins to sob unevenly.

Prompt #4: Alternities: Extravehicular On The Spark

You’re standing on the curved, chrome-bright hull of a space station that stretches to the horizon in all directions - not a smooth horizon but a busy one, with shapes like distant cityscapes, mountain-ranges of conical turrets glowing faintly with violet light, and a faint if inaudible hum travelling upward through your feet, varying in strength and direction at the passage of distant traffic, scalloped domes sliding over the surface or small treaded runners like motor-trikes zipping by at much greater speeds. A white plastic belt around your waist puffs cool fog every few seconds, a black metal rod in your hand smells of ozone and seems glued to your palm, and your boots are heavy, steel-soled, and have a blinking generator at the heel - but otherwise, save for a pair of goggles tucked into one pocket, you’re wearing street clothes, just what you’d expect yourself to be wearing. Your hair moves around you in a cloud, and your stomach turns uneasily. Even though you seem to have both air and heat there is no gravity. You might as well be hanging from the underside of this craft, not standing on it.

Looking up - or down - anyway, away from the ship - you see a massive planet filling a quarter of the sky, covered in jade-banded rings of cloud that swirl and churn anxiously. Between you and the luminescent green world is suspended a miniscule shape, round, red, like a rough-edged droplet of blood. It and the planet above it appear to be slowly expanding as you watch.

You’re not alone. A group of other people, similarly equipped, stands around you, looking as confused as you feel. A startled expression crosses all their faces at the same moment as an excited, fast-talking voice enters your mind.

-- hacked the telepathic network and scrambled your heads! Bet the champs never thought that was possible! What does that tell you about -- never mind, it can wait. We’re live now, but only for a moment. We need to avoid any *further* psychic interference, so we’re going dark. Repeat, the network is going dark. They won’t be able to get into your heads again. The clock’s at seventy-two minutes at my mark, Fellow Travelers. Aaaand… Mark. Okay. Seventy-two minutes to bring down those engines, or we’re out of the World Series and you can all see how you like floating home! Let’s crash this sucker, kids! See you all on Sangre.

The voice vanishes. You have no idea who it was, and no memory of what it was talking about.

"I'm not sure. We don't have space-suits, so..."

He put a hand briefly on the belt, still slowly puffing mist into the air around him. "This is probably what's giving us air. The boots keep us from floating away. But something still has to be keeping us from boiling and exploding in vaccuum..."

Souji's been moving around the room methodically, glancing into every cubby, speaking to everyone too consumed with anxiety to move, and despite the ginger way he moves indicating that he feels the same pains as the rest of them, he's handled himself with perfect aplomb, composed, apparently undisturbed.

When he sees Hado's smile, a frown creases his brown for the first time. He approaches with a certain slow caution, remaining just out of easy arm's reach.

"Ready for a fight?" The question is just as bland and neutral as the rest of his mannerisms.

[personal profile] fridgeninja 2014-02-09 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Not in charge, per se, but this Souji looked more cool and composed than most of the others in the room, methodically examining every corner and every cubby in the morgue, moving with a cool and stubborn disregard for the pain and stiffness he obviously felt, and pausing to speak quietly to those few Travelers who were crying outright or curled on themselves, unable to cope.

And, of course, he looked up at hearing his name called, crossing the room with a few steps, expression curious.

... The universe wasn't doing this to him. Surely not. The girl didn't look familiar, didn't sound familiar, but between those names and those glasses...

Remy drifted forward for a closer look, not so much approaching as making sure the motion of the crowd nudged him in that direction, until he was in easy earshot, and then smiling in slow disbelief.

"You a long way from Westchester, chere." Although spoken rather than broadcast telepathically, it's unquestionably the same voice that had commented on the pack of fools.

"...More than a year. Less than two. Keeping a calendar is difficult when the seasons change between one world and the next." There's a reluctance to his admission, one with a hard edge beneath it, although not directed at her. He's bitter; there's no doubt of that.

Scout tensed, though kept her hands at her sides for the moment. No need to start a fight yet - though that comment was clearly directed at her. Except this man was a stranger, and the school was supposed to be a secret.

His eyes were strange - stranger than her's, even, though he clearly wasn't knocking down parts of the building by accident just by looking at it. He might be a mutant, too... but he was still a stranger.

"Should I know you?" She did her best to sound certain and cold, and not off-balance like she felt.

"Remy LeBeau," he said with a smirk and a bow, looking at her with a certain consideration, surely visible. "You could say Professor Xavier and I are old friends, I think. I've helped at the school from time to time. Not while you were a student, though. I would remember."

Knowing the professor's name lent him a certain amount of credibility, but she didn't like the look the man - Remy - was giving her. She crossed her arms in front of her, as if it gave any sort of barrier between the two of them.

"Funny, she's never mentioned you - and there's never been any students but us." Granted, Xavier never brought up personal matters with any of them, so she might very well have known the man, but his self-confidence seemed a bit unwarranted.

"Oh."

It's a beautiful and envy-worthy start to things.

A small smile appears on his face and he gives a curt nod as if to confirm he completely understands ( and agrees, because of course he knew this already he needs to keep gil sharp, though! ) "Sounds easy."

No, it doesn't. But, whatever, they don't have time to dwell on this, the voice said they only had seventy-two minutes. Considering they are going to end up wasting time trying to apparently recover memories and information they've lost, they just don't have time for the extra common things like dealing with any apprehension Oz feels in the pit of his stomach.

He swallows it down hard.

"Do you think Raven can help at all?" Oz asks, glancing down at his feet and lifts a foot rather intentionally, testing the boots and their weight as well as trying to see if there's anything different about moving in them considering it's pretty obvious that they should be floating rather than being grounded to something.

Raven can take out engines, there's no doubt. But, he doesn't yet know if Gil can make contact with Raven here to begin with.

As much as he resents this childish babysitting shit that Hijikata still hasn't been able to grow out of and insists on acting upon, Souji would be inclined to agree if he knew what was going through the other's head.

Souji tolerates Hijikata's babysitting—like hell he's going to extend the same favor to anyone else here. Not now, not ever.

Besides, if Hijikata goes, Souji goes. He won't let the other leave him behind under any circumstances.

They really are all they have and they can't afford to trivialize it under any circumstances. Besides, Hijikata is always looking after everyone else, but who's looking after him? Kondou-san would never forgive him if he let something happen to the other ( and Souji would never forgive himself, either ) and that includes it occurring as consequence to any of their actions—singlehandedly or together.

"Do you think it's really a trap?" He doesn't want to be questioning this, he wants to shrug it off and turn and leave the doorway to go find whatever it is they should hopefully be able to find as an answer to their predicament, but his feet feel like lead and he's frozen in place, still staring at the door. This time. Wait.

. . . wait?

Something flickers in his eyes suddenly. "If what it says is true, we've done this before but all wrong, right?

He turns to look back down the stairs to the dim lighting coming form the single room they'd woken up with.

"This all occurred? So, did we stand here as we are now needing to make a choice?"

A pause, his voice dropping slightly in volume without realizing it.

"...Or was it me or you on the other side of the door the last time or the time before that?"

Because that? That would change everything.

A flicker of surprise showed on his face for just a moment before vanishing. "Not at Westchester, maybe," he countered. "And not in a class. But the Professor, she traveled the world for a long time before settling down. Anyway, that's beside the point at the moment. I owe the Professor a debt. And Remy pays his debts. Making sure you know what's what here - maybe that can count as one installment."

"Are all the worlds we grace with our presence really worth visiting?" The question is in singsong, but goodnatured all the same.

Souji laughs, giving a small shrug. "I'm just wondering if we should have found a way to get you a cat or something to keep you company instead of the cards by now. What if you got pick-pocketed by some child thinking you're an easy victim?"

He's poking with his proverbial stick again due to the same boredom that's dragged him to the card table.

For him, the game is definitely to pass the time, so he knows more than he'd care to count some of his moves were done without thought or reason. Every so often, he might get a little bit more interested if something unique happened that prompted some attention from others playing. But, there wasn't much here for today, was there. It's really just a physical type of white-noise companion to the group's social behavior.

"Say, you don't have any thoughts as to why we've been stuck in limbo here for so long now, do you?" It's a question he very much wants an explanation or answer to, should one exist, but the way he presents it makes it sound like he might as well have been asking about the weather.

"This place is a... cosmic waiting room. We're on hold, in transit between universes. The forces that brought us here like to drop us in new worlds and make us trouble-shoot for them. Depending on whether you like mysticism or cheap puns best, we call those forces the Arcana or the Champs."

Lecture mode has been enabled, and Tim can basically continue fielding questions for as long as she asks them.

Nearly everyone in the room seemed to be in some state of confusion or terror, or a healthy mix of both. There was someone, however, who was not a part of that pattern, and that caught Souji's attention. He tightened his grip on the scalpel, staring, the way an animal might, every muscle tense while internally the primal urge to be as far from this room as possible warred with the desire to know just what was going on.

And then Hijikata called his name.

He turned, tracking the source of the older man's voice until he saw him, and saw the other one, the one who wasn't behaving like the rest. He couldn't remember if he was a fellow Traveler or not. He couldn't remember if he was a danger, or not. But he was an anomaly, one that was moving towards Hijikata, and if he couldn't be sure this other person was a friend, that made them a threat. He turned and started following.

"That was us." He says it a little shortly - the ache might be half a decade or old at this point, but it hasn't really faded, deep down. He hasn't let it. Something most of Bruce's wards have had in common.

Space-suits?

Boiling and exploding in vacuum?

The look on Gilbert's face suggests that some parts of that statement might as well be in Chinese, and he's sorry he asked, because if they have to worry about something spontaneously going wrong and making them boil and explode, that's just one more distraction they really don't need right now.

He lifts one leg experimentally - tugging a little harder and frowning with exertion until whatever about those boots is holding them down gives way and his foot finally pops free - and then after a moment of flailing for balance that's perhaps not necessary in zero gravity, but still quite reflexive - he puts his foot down again.

Ezio was never in a million years about to creep up behind Rosa and give her a push into the water after following her for a little while. He would absolutely never do something like that ever because he's a mature-ass adult who don't play no games and is always about the serious business at hand. But if he were going to do something like that, he'd stop dead in his tracks once there was a voice with no source and some more angry shouting to follow.

With no one to blame for the voice, Ezio looks to Rosa.

"You've likely frightened them away with all this shouting, cara mia."

Oz's seemingly blasé reaction, at least, makes it easier to contain his own misgivings; as much as something in Gil is more inclined to take the opportunity to find every last detail and trace of wrongness in the situation and give it all the worry that it properly deserves, supporting Oz takes precedence, and so if Oz wants to get right to business and go after these engines -

Then it's time for Gil to consider whether Raven can do them any good here.

He closes his eyes for a moment and takes a breath. He doesn't feel cut off here, exactly, but -

"The Abyss isn't connected to this world as strongly as it is to ours. It would be harder for Raven to appear here...but I don't think it's impossible."

Not impossible. But probably not to be relied upon, either.

Indeed that would change everything. If it was Souji on the other side of that door, the idea of waiting for anything would never even occur to him. Hijikata would be out and tearing across whatever's out there as fast as he could pull all the -

...

It's a lot of things jammed into the doorframe, isn't it?

He moves past Souji to stand directly in front of the door, fingers reaching up to brush against some of the debris jammed into the cracks along the edges. "You'd think just barring the goddamned door would be enough, wouldn't you?" If the other side had an opposing army or just a vicious monster, keeping it out ought to be enough, and yet here someone - them? - has gone to great lengths to keep there from being even the smallest gap.

What could have scared them badly enough, been enough of a threat, to make that necessary?

It's easier to treat all of this like a job, that's something she can wrap her head around. Gathering information is the first step and what luck, she's been delivered a handsome young man with more answers than she has. She can work with this.

It's not much blood; a small amount like that, Hijikata can't smell, would hardly notice if he weren't looking right at it.

And given how much his perception of such things has changed, since he drank the ochimizu, how even those few drops should've been enough to draw his attention before his eyes even set on them - between this and the scars, he has to suppose that means he's human again.

He's not sure that's such a good thing, here.

It's lucky he didn't get a chance to do anything childish, the result would not have been at all pleasant. She's unnerved and, although she's reluctant to admit it, a little afraid. Voices in heads and architecture that turns her stomach and makes her unsure which way is up is just not something an Italian woman is used to seeing.

Seeing Ezio, though, is soothing in its own way. Who can she trust if not him?
