C H A R A C T E R; NAME: Imriel de la Courcel CANON: Kushiel's Legacy POINT IN CANON: Kushiel's Avatar, page 378 – from Darsanga, maybe half an hour after he was branded AGE: 10 APPEARANCE: Around 4'4”, Imriel strongly favors his mother's looks – meaning that even among D'Angelines, he stands out as beautiful. He has the typical Shahrizai looks – sapphire blue eyes, black hair with a nearly blue sheen, and ivory skin. His Courcel heritage stands out in his straight brows and firm jawline.
He bears many scars, lash marks, and a brand from his time in Darsanga. Already with a slim physique, he is now malnourished and far too skinny. CANON HISTORY: Here. He was sold into slavery in Drujan, to the zenana of Darsanga. There, he has undergone terrible torments and abuse at the hands of the Drujani and the Tartars, particularly the Mahrkagir, Lord Death, and the Tartar Warlord Jagun. CANON PERSONALITY: Imriel was born to treachery and politics, but he was – by design – raised innocent and ignorant of all those things, knowing only the simple life of a goatherd. A rather unusual child, he has a powerful personality, a strong sense of right and wrong, and all the inherent pride of both his Courcel and Kusheline heritage.
He wasn't the oldest child at the sanctuary of Elua, but he was often the one the others followed. He's not afraid to speak his mind – even to people in positions of power or when doing so isn't necessarily a good idea – and he likes to push boundaries. He would often take risks, just to see what would happen, how far he could go, and he never complained when he got hurt because of them – he was afraid of others seeing him cry.
Though he could be playful, Imriel was often very grave for his age – quiet and observant, with a willingness to take a secret to the grave if he feels it is serious enough. He has a strong sense for what is right and proper in terms of personal responsibilities and obligations, even as he scorns many societal ones that he finds silly or offensive.
Still, even as he could be grave and a little scornful, he was always kind to his peers and those under him, brave and with an intensity of spirit that made those around him feel more alive.
This is Imriel as he was before Darsanga.
It's a different Imriel that emerges – with many of the same qualities, but hurt and scarred in spirit as well as body. He is paranoid and suspicious, always wary of a trap or ulterior motives – and is much quicker to anger than before, lashing out sometimes even when no harm was meant. He is slow to warm up to and has issues trusting people, hating any touch by a stranger – and he is twice as wary of betrayal. For those he does come to trust, he fears that they will leave him behind or abandon him, and he will hold a grudge for years.
He struggles with his Kushieline nature after Darsanga, rejecting it outright for many years. (Kushieline nature manifests in many ways, including seeing the fault-lines in people's souls – described under abilities – and enjoying the harsher pleasures of Naamah's service.) Relationships at all are difficult for him, and he has complicated and confused feelings about being touched, both craving and reviling it. He wants, perhaps more than anything else, and more purely, to be good – but he does not find that an easy thing to be. He struggles to discover what that means, and fears himself if he fails in his attempts.
Despite this, though, he is still kind and brave. Defiant in captivity, he keeps his spirit – and once he has begun to heal, he begins to see and learn about the world with wonder once again. Though he is slow to trust, he loves all the more fiercely for what he's been through, and has shown many times a willingness to die for those he truly cares about – careless of the consequences while defending them.
POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/A ABILITIES:Herding goats I MEAN. Aside from his beauty, his quickness and vitality, and possibly slightly faster than average healing, his Kushieline heritage allows him to see the fault-lines in people's souls. This often means understanding people's intentions, their deepest selves, what makes them who they are – and then seeing how to manipulate them with it. To hurt them, or move them to anger, or blind them to the truth. It is this ability that twice has Melisande on the verge of siezing the crown. Imriel, however, doesn't yet fully understand what this means, or how to use it. INVENTORY; Only the clothes he is wearing, which are little more than rags by this point ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? He's undergone a lot of physical, mental, and sexual abuse during his time as a slave and especially in Darsanga.
