C H A R A C T E R;
NAME: Jack B. Badd
CANON: The Chronicles of Riddick (Specifically Pitch Black and Dark Fury)
POINT IN CANON: Post Dark Fury
AGE: 12
APPEARANCE: I'm tough. I can keep up!
CANON HISTORY: Wiki!
CANON PERSONALITY:
Jack isn't even a teenager yet and she already has a level of cynicism about the universe to her. It's still just the early stages but it is a blooming emotion in her. She understands that it isn't a safe universe for a young girl on her own, and while we never learn what it is she was running away from, she at least formed the opinion that dressing up as a boy and pretending to be one was a safer alternative to letting people know she was actually a girl.

Jack is a curious young kid who is just that little bit too nosy that keeps putting her in danger, and yet observant enough to catch onto things that a lot of the adults around her in the middle of a crisis don't seem to notice. She is still developing her view of the world. We can tell from the way she interacts with the other survivors on the desert planet they've been shipwrecked on that she still wants to trust people. She puts on a rough edged front and acts tough, but part of that is her desire to be taken seriously and seen as an adult. It's not an uncommon set of desires for any kid to have.

But Jack doesn't seek out authority figures or someone to protect her, at least not directly. The adult who catches her attention is Riddick. A dangerous convict and killer that everyone else seems to fear. Jack, on the other hand, idolizes him. She tries to mimic him the way a young kid would mimic their elder sibling.

At this point in her life, Jack is still trusting enough to form friendships with the other survivors, but she clings to the most dangerous of the group. She's cautious and a bit morbid with her sarcasm and humor, but she's still a functional kid at the moment, and impressionable. Her mimicry of Riddick is less about wanting to be a killer, or clinging to a strong authority figure and more about what Jack is looking for for herself. She wants to be strong, dangerous, maybe even a little feared. The way she constantly sets out away from the group or tries to explore and solve problems on her own gives a glimpse at just how little she wants to be accountable to people.

She's a runaway searching for her foothold in a vast and dangerous universe. It's only natural that she idolizes a man who is so clearly a survivor and a loner he might as well have it stamped on his forehead. But those desires don't mesh yet with her still very human need to be a part of the group.

She is developing her sense of the universe, but her humanity is still very much in tact. She mourns the loss of every person who dies along the way, even the less than savory merc who was happily plotting to throw her to the monsters to buy himself some time to survive.

Each time one of her built up masks cracks the panic of a twelve year old shines through, but it rarely lasts for long because she can't afford it. She's resilient and even when she has a moment to break a little, she pulls herself back together and puts on a new mask, smooths the cracks and pushes forward with a determined and insistent desire to survive and be stronger than the kid people see her as.

She doesn't like seeing others get hurt or killed, but Jack is an adaptive person, and the more she sees, the more gray her universe becomes. It escalates to the point where Jack takes a life. She does so to save Riddick, but the action sets her down a path of finding her violent, animal nature. The same one she sees in Riddick and tries to emulate.

Ultimately, her latching so firmly to riddick is not just the desire to be viewed with the level of fear and respect people give him, or even just a result of her wanting to be faster, stronger and more capable of surviving like he is. It's about a connection that forms between the two of them just from her limited interactions with Riddick. He humors her bravado of violent humor, even if it's momentary, and he doesn't pose a threat to her directly. She so badly wants to trust him that even whilst hiding in a cave with dwindling light and little hope of ever surviving or seeing him again, she holds on to the slim chance that he'll come back for them. Really a very ill-founded optimism, as it is entirely possible he would have left without her and Abu, had Fry not gone after him.

For Jack, life requires a series of masks she puts on to suit her situations. Underneath them all she has empathy for others, a desire to be a part of something, and a need for validation. But it is her desires to leave that behind that drive her forward into dangerous situations and poor choices. She lives in a universe that is full of violence and danger from people, creatures and the unforgiving and unpredictable nature of space. For her, the possibility of being strong enough, smart enough and brave enough to survive that without fear, and be feared and respected instead of pushed aside or taken advantage of is a very attractive potential.

She is brave because she wants to be brave, and she pushes forward into situations that terrify her out of her own stubborn need to prove to herself that she can do better. In every sense of the term, Jack is building her own identity. She left behind the life and person she was before she ran away, and through Pitch Black we see her searching to build herself into Jack B. Badd, a crass, tough survivor who doesn't need anyone. It wasn't who she was at the time, but it was the person she was molding herself into.

With Dark Fury we see this shift just a little. Jack looks up to Riddick as a big brother and a guardian. She follows in his footsteps, and holds a dedication to him that inspires enough bravery and loyalty that she is willing to kill to protect him, and does so. That first death on her hands doesn't seem to effect her the way it should have affected a 12 year old who just blew someones brains out. She carried out the kill with determination and ease, a factor that is enough to leave both Riddick and Abu al-Walid concerned.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: n/a
ABILITIES: Jack For a twelve year old Jack is a clever survivor. Or at least smart enough to disguise herself as a boy and stay alive in dangerous situations around people that were less than savory. Jack is observant and adaptive. She takes on new traits as they suit her, developing her new self the way someone else might try on a new outfit. She is by no means the greatest artist in the world, but she is capable of putting on a very convincing show to distract both herself and others from whatever fears or concerns grip her. And while her masks break occasionally, she recovers quickly, pushing forward with admirable determination.

Jack has no special abilities or powers. She only has her observational skills and her determination to rely on. They're above average for a 12 year old, but still fairly standard for the human race.

Aside from this, she learns quickly through observation, able to piece together how technology or weaponry she hasn't encountered before works either through observing someone else use it or by taking the time to study it a bit. (Figuring out how different solar equipment works, learning how to use a complicated rifle after observing a merc use it briefly, learning where the 'sweet spots' (dangerous and deadly spots to cause someone harm) are on a person after observing a fight. The very first time she has a gin in her hand she uses it to literally blow a woman's brains out, much to the shock of her travel companions.

She is at the least a fast learner, and keen on mimicry.

INVENTORY; Goggles and clothes
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW?
She has a foul mouth and she is probably going to cause all kinds of trouble.

S A M P L E S;
ACTIONSPAM SAMPLE: Go for the sweet spot. Didn't quite make the cut comment length wise, but it's here if you're interested in poking at it.

Sample:
I've been on worse planets but this one really wants some kind of prize for fucked up. Someone explain to me what's fuckin' going on. I get that the water is some kind of trick, but why is everything I try to eat made of some kind of crappy cloth? Who the hell do I have to punch around here to get a bite to eat? [Every curse sounds just a little forced, like Jack is searching for extra places to insert them into every sentence uttered.]

At least if there were real things around I could kill something. [Which was purely theoretical and unlikely but that was beside the point.] But this weird shit don't even bleed. They must be some kind of kid toys or something. I don't have time to play around. I've got better places then this to be and more important shit to be doing.

[It's very frustrating watching the confetti stream bounce around like it's mocking her. Pretending to be something she needs but denying her the ability to quench her thirst.]

Forget it. I don't need anyone's help. I'm gonna go find my fucking ship and get off this freaky rock.

PROSE SAMPLE:
Alone. Jack was alone on an unfamiliar planet. There were other people around, but that meant nothing. She was alone.

For a twelve year old, Jack was fairly aware of the dangers of the world. Even before the mercs, before the Bioraptors, before Riddick, she had known as much. The universe was a harsh fucking place and it was no place for a twelve year old girl to be wandering alone. Jack dressed like a boy because it seemed easier. She had always been more of a tomboy anyway, and it was just safer and easier to be seen as a boy. People would let her do more, harass her less and take her more seriously if they assumed she was a boy rather than a girl. It just made more sense to keep hiding to the rest of the world, even if Riddick and Imam knew the truth.

It was hard enough getting by as a kid on her own. It would be harder still if she had to worry about the way people would treat her if they knew. She wasn't naive. She had seen enough in her young years to know that there were no friendly worlds and no safe ships.

Riddick was gone. Imam, Abu al-Walid was as well, and that was frightening, but nothing was worse than knowing that Riddick was no longer around. He was more than just an idol to Jack. He made her feel safe, as ironic or idiotic as that was. He was the baddest badass there was in the entire universe and without him around she suddenly felt the dangerous vastness of space all too well all over again. Some small voice in the back of her mind whispered frightened thoughts of being abandoned and left in this place. Dropped off without warning or a word and left to her own devices. She knew they were upset about her taking a life, but she refused to believe they abandoned her.

People could say what they liked about Riddick but so far he had never let her down, and she obstinately refused to believe he ever would. She felt for the broken goggles in her pocket and slipped them on over the fuzz of hair growing back on her scalp and shoved fear down under resolve, ignoring the slight shake already present in her hands. The goggles might as well have been a rifle in her hands for the courage and fire they made her skin tingle with. She was Jack B. Badd and she would not let fear win. Riddick would come back for her. Until then, she would not be afraid. She would face the universe and not be afraid, or she would gut any fucking merc who tried to use her to find him. Whatever it took, though, she would do the one thing she knew Riddick knew how to do best.

She would survive.
