C H A R A C T E R; NAME: Shin Hakamada CANON: Aphorism POINT IN CANON: Chapter 48 AGE: 15-16 (His birthday isn't known, so we can't be sure he's not 16 yet.) APPEARANCE: There's a handy image here, but for the sake of noting stuff: His hair is pretty obviously dyed, but it's not completely dyed, either: For whatever reason, a good portion of his hair is left undyed, creating a "crest-like" shape with the dyed hair. He has a cross-shaped scar on his left cheek, he's fairly athletic, and he has a tattoo of the character "蘇" on his right calf. Also worth noting, the tattoo can and will change positions if the spot it's on is damaged enough to remove it.
CANON HISTORY: In Japan, there is a famous high school known as Naraka high School -- those who graduate are guaranteed prestigious government positions and are basically set for life, though it has a very bizarre entry requirement: "You must be able to see the island in the sky." This is the only requirement for entry, and this is what's publicly known to most people. The truth of Naraka is a bit more complicated: Naraka was essentially formed by an entity with god-like abilities known as Yama, who was prophecized to destroy the world. In exchange for not destroying the world, the Japanese government is to offer those high-school students who can see the island in the sky. There, they are given a power based on a kanji, and are forced to fight for their lives against monster-filled trials known as "blights". Those that graduate are allowed to live, and are usually accepted into the government as part of a group dedicated to finding a way to do something about it. Though while this is officially a state secret, it's not as well-guarded as one might expect: Roughly half the students that attend the school every year know the truth behind it, and prepare themselves accordingly.
What's known about his backstory before entering school mostly comes from Mamoru Kuga. The two had been together for a large chunk of their education, and inevitably always wound up in the same class. However, the two were constantly on bad terms: Shin was a very aggressive person, and while he genuinely tries to help people, he has little tolerance for people that don't stand up for themselves, which ultimately wound up turning into outright bullying, with Shin trying to force Mamoru to stand up for himself and stop "running away from the problem" whether he wanted to or not. And of course, in the end, both wound up going to Naraka. Shin is indicated to be one of the students that knew the truth beforehand. Precisely how he knew about it has never been mentioned, though one of the information segments mentions he has and older brother -- The most common reason people are "in-the-know" about Naraka tends to involve a sibling as a graduate, so it's likely that his brother was a graduate.
When asked to choose his own character, Shin ultimately chose 蘇, meaning to revive or resurrect, under the reasoning that it would turn out okay if he just came back to life after he died. And while at the same time it almost guaranteed his survival, it also guaranteed that he had no particular protection from the inevitable blights. As a result, his first day in Naraka involved being killed by the initial blight, and when he managed to survive (thanks to his reviving power), he found out that Mamoru was his roommate for his time in Naraka, and Mamoru was heading towards a mental breakdown, and Shin being Shin, tried to get Mamoru past it through aggression and shouting at him. Mamoru responded by stabbing Shin in the heart with a pair of scissors. Of course, this really did nothing but antagonize Shin further, as he died and revived shortly after Mamoru ran away in shock, and a Blight came along.
It was a special kind of Blight, known as a "Separation Blight". Separation blights occur when the amount of students are divisible by three, and separates all the students into groups of three. Naturally, Shin wound up with Mamoru, but also wound up with the protagonist Momiji. Of course, once Shin found out he was paired up with Mamoru, he gave Mamoru a good punch to the face and decided that was enough. The trial in this case wound up being "fight a dragon! You can either use your powers, or use your strength!", and in an impressive moment of stupidity, Shin decided to kick the dragon. And thus Momiji wound up saving Shin from being eaten by a dragon and getting the way out, except Momiji wound up caught under a tree in the chaos. Shin did his best to move it, but wasn't strong enough to and tried to get Mamoru to help out, but... Mamoru instead tried to run away with the key, prompting Shin to try to fight him to get him to help, which ended with Shin getting impaled on a tree and dying. Mamoru was killed by the Blight a few minutes later, if you're curious.
When Shin inevitably came back to life after the Blight ended, everyone became aware of his character and ability. He thus became everyone's sacrificial friend! If they needed to find out what a Blight does? The best solution was to throw Shin at it and see what it does! ...Shin was less than pleased with this arrangement, but seemed to have largely accepted it before too long: He's against killing himself for nothing, but his tendency to jump into things to help people in trouble tended to wind up with him one of the first dead anyways.
However, before long, a special Blight came along: Water. Water would continue to attack every day until it was defeated, and in an attempt to force one of his classmates to fight it, a group of people in Class 4 arranged the death of one of Shin's classmates. This wound up quickly escalating into an all-out war between Shin's class (Class 1), and Class 4, led by Tomonaga, who acquired the power "Steal" and used it to steal body parts off of people, including one of the government officials in charge of watching over them. While Shin only played a minor part, Tomonaga successfully killed Momiji for a short time by stealing his heart and stomping on it, and in Class 1's counterattack, Shin's attempt to stop one of Class 4's more dangerous members was countered when Tomonaga intervene, with Tomonaga leaving Shin comatose so that his revival power wouldn't trigger. Ultimately some of his classmates found him and threw him off the roof, but he wouldn't finish reviving until after another Blight arrived, causing another Seperation Blight, during which a zombie Momiji killed Tomonaga, ripped out Tomonaga's heart, and put it in his own body. As you can probably tell by now, things getting resolved while Shin's dead happens a lot.
As the fallout from Tomonaga's war continued, Class 1's leader Sanjuurou Hinata revealed to Class 1 the history of Naraka, and a group of Sanjuurou's most trusted allies went to have a negotiation with Yama... while Shin and fellow Class 1 member Eko were on guard duty, whose job was to alert the main group when Yama's bodyguards returned. After that, Shin wound up not being involved with the chaos for a while, aside from a short Blight where he wound up trapped in a monster-filled passage with Eko and an incident where everyone in the school had to work together in an attempt to counter the Flower Blight. Shortly after the Flower blight, the numbers of students reached a multiple of three once more, and with another Blight coming... Several students decided to take matters into their own hands. By which I mean that a group of them went to go hunt for Shin and kill him so that the Blight wouldn't turn into a Separation type. He's being pulled into things immediately after the Separation Blight began.
