Hiroshi/James is going to be giving up the pretense. With things OBVIOUSLY going wrong, it would be irresponsible of him not to provide whatever aid he can - and yet at the same time, his primary objective is going to be trying to turn the Thistle House into as much of a sanctuary as possible to ward off the worst of things.
If he finds himself wandering in dreams, he may also use that knowledge of the stories of the past to try to pull people out of the worst sorts of nightmares using what he knows of being able to salve hearts with tea. Whether this ends well for him or not...
