First Walkabout: The Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice
July 22nd - August 26th

It’s been half a year since one of the strangest dances on record took place at the Orrery, and the inhabitants of Nibiru, spurred by subtle religious and political shifts, have made a new discovery: a subterranean complex of Starmover origin, exposed only by an earthquake in the unstable south that opened a chasm directly over it. The Calendrical Parliament immediately claimed stewardship over it, threatening any country who moved to claim it for their own, and outfitted an expedition with representatives of all nations - not only scientists, priests, and historians, but dancers and artists, in case it has a function like the Orrery, and diplomats, in case it held any undeniable worth to the rival Colonies. Now, at the hottest time of the year, the overheated landship must shelter in the chasm and cool down, so the explorers have no choice but to remain for at least a month, mapping the alien structure and navigating their own political and personal rivalries, far away from the rest of the world…

For the Travelers who find themselves here, for the first time or the second time, infiltrating or investigating, all they know is that they still have Liminal Space and the Telepathic Network, but no sign of the other Travelers -- their Liminal Space and their Network are separate from those used by the Travelers in Questing Country. Before they wound up here, they remember a colorful vortex, like and unlike a dungeon portal, that had opened in the midst of Liminal Space, and seemed irresistibly tempting to step through and explore…

Ambrose is doing the thing and will be Investigating! Previously he infiltrated the Orrery as a Philosophical Nautilus from Floreal, but his memories of this Jaunt are patchier than most. Fortunately, the native technology is similar to that of his home world so he can happily fake it 'til he makes it.

Well, happily as he can while cut off from other Travelers because goodness that's terrifying. He'll try to slide in with the scientists, historians, and dancers to see about making sense of The Thing and hopefully pick up some nifty tech swag along the way.

Cassandra will be Investigating and wondering just how she got into this and why anyone would send her on a delicate mission like this when all she knows how to do is hit things with her sword.

Riddick is also investigating, cuz I've infiltrated him a lot lately, and he needs a break. He'll have to moonlight as a guard, or maybe an explorer? His special eyes would be super useful in an underground complex, after all, and he's got Questing Sense to drag him in useful directions.

New CR will be a thing I hope :3

I'll skooch it over from te original post so RE: SKILLS - is it possible to have examples of what optical/laser sciences and Starmover tech would entail, a framework to build on, limitations? Would it be simply acquiring items or the knowledge of how to construct more of them? Or is it a "players make it up, mods decide if it works" thing?

Yes! I'm not even sure they HAVE mentionable CR at this point! I think Ambrose once acted concerned for him over the network?

Malik is going to be investigating for a change!

He's probably going to be inserting himself with the scholars and/or priests, and being super helpful with his map making skills.

He's also good at climbing things and scouting so there's always some of that to do.

He will also be fairly comfortable in the heat... yeah.

Liara will be joining Team Walkabout as an Investigator, since she's infiltrated the last two Jaunts. She will happily slot herself in with the scientists, and poke her nose down all manner of dark holes in the name of exploration and discovery. My apologies in advance to anyone who has to rescue her from a high-tech alien bathroom in security lockdown.

Aw yay, Riddick can have his friend along ^^ He'll totally rescue her. And bitch at her the whole time, but you know. Him.

Riddick can get to know him for reals now! And can help sketch things out as prelims for his maps, since he's an explorer dude here, I think :B

She probably won't actually need rescue unless something malfunctions severely, it was a joke on how the PC meets her in canon - stuck in a stasis bubble in a location that appears to be decorated in bathroom tile. (The mid-jaunt entry into the Grid was so very fitting for her.)

Oh, well. I totally missed THAT joke! Lack of needing rescued will be better for his blood pressure, then :3

Gotta keep the "squishy scholar" safe right? Malik isn't going to sit around with old farts complaining about the heat XD
